OUR BIG DEBUT!

My understanding is that CALLING ALL CARS! will be playable tonight at a GDC event. And then on the show floor for the next three days (starting Wednesday)!

I will not be there tonite (I was supposed to be there but last minute tuning needs came up) but I will be all over the net this evening in hopes that a few GDC goers will post impressions.

Having the game at GDC is a challenge as press and other game makers are the main folks playing your baby. And they are the toughest critics of all.

But short of some tuning here and there, what they are plaing at GDC is about 95% the game that will ship. Granted, internet play will not be on display (the heart of the game...with the soul being split screen)...but that's not our game's fault; it's just the set up they gave us (no net connection)...

So I hope folks will be nice to our kid and really like it (maybe love it)?

We'll know soon enough! If you see any player impressions on the net, please shoot me a comment? I would appreciate it.

Talk to ya'll later!

David

  1. Dave, that's great that it will soon be on display at GDC tonight. Hope it goes well. After thinking about it, I think you should give an option to let users who lag behind a way to catch up. It makes these types of games more enjoyable.

    Can't wait to download it!

  7. hey, have you guys heard about the playstation network my home space? it sounds freakin amazing. I'm super excited about this coming out.

they're talking about in the future, if game developers were coming out with a game, they could make a little appartment, or stand in this virtual world and you could go check it out with your avatar and stuff. it sounds unbelievable

ps. dave, love your work and yoru personality dude, can't wait to get my hands on CAC

  8. Phil Harrison NEVER disappoints. He and Jaffe are the two people I most admire.

I admire Dave because of his frankness and he's never afraid to say it as it is. I admire Phil because he's like Midas... everything he touches turns to gold. He is definitely one of Sony's brightest individuals. My admiration has little to do with him sending the museum an autographed mouse pad. :P

Mr. Jaffe, please, please, please bring the Chink killing game to Playstation Network! Even if it's stalled as a PSP game, you can deliver it as a download only game, right? You can't let something with such an important message disappear.

Thank you, and keep the faith!

  15. I don't think the message of the game was to kill those different from you in a racist hail of bullets.

Dave, I want to thank you for having the VISION and the GUTS to create a game like Heartland. America has been INFECTED by enemy parasites that serve only to WEAKEN us until we are ripe to be conquered. The sooner Americans wake up and do what MUST be done, the sooner we can have a peaceful future for our children.

These "people" need to be purged from our country. HEARTLAND could raise awareness and bring the issue to the light of day. Please don't let it go to waste.

  17. Hey Jaffe, I am was wondering if Calling all Cars had Mic support?? I don't recall seeing it anywhere. Mic support is needed in a game like this so you can talk trash!

Still going to buy it regardless.

On a completely different, but possibly more lucrative topic; your choice of casting for Kratos in the upcoming God of War movie needs a second opinion.

I think Kratos should be played by "Prison Break" star Amaury Nolasco. If you look at his face he could easily personify Kratos.

The thing about Djimon Hounsou is that he has a very thick accent and would make it very hard on an audience to identify with him as Kratos.

Forget Hounsou- Amaury Nolasco is your man! My guess is that he would be a heckuva lot cheaper as well, and would not be already involved with 8 other movie projects like Hounsou.

I can't wait to play GoWII this week, thank you for creating one of the best game franchises ever!

  19. Hey Jaffe! I'm joining your blog as you demanded I do! Haha. Kidding, I know you weren't 'demanding' it, but you asked and here I am. Thanks for bringing the site to my attention. (Just a memory refresher - you spoke with me and Carlos before the Game Design Challenge for a while, I was the designer from Gameloft).

It was great meeting you, and best of luck with CAC. It looks great, and like you said, if this is the kind of game design that makes you happy, that's what you should be doing.

Hop over to my blog sometime, I'd love to see you around there. http://jl.hyperactiveproductions.net/blog/

There's a couple pictures of you in there as well, so you might wanna grab them for your own perusal.

I asked Dave this same question awhile ago.

  21. Hi David,

This is the guy who ran Twisted Metal World back in the day. I talked to you briefly at GDC after the Game Design Challenge and you asked me to leave you a comment.

It'd be awesome if you could shoot me an email: herak(a)pacbell.net - like I said when we met, I've been following your games for a long time and it would be awesome to communicate with you. Also, poke around on my website if you'd like.

I saw CAC at GDC and had a chance to play one game. Unfortunately I don't think many people saw it because it was on the same machine as fl0w, which was getting most of the attention. I thought it was fun, I really liked how the game handled and played. One criticism I have is that it doesn't seem like the weapons are that important since it's fairly easy to just ram people. But that's just a first impression, I only played for 5-10 minutes.

please tell me its not true that you want Djimon Hounsou as kratos in the god of war movie(if it ever happens). kratos was white in the game and shouldnt be played by a black guy.it would change the whole game. he doesnt even look like kratos really.

  23. Hey David,

It was great meeting you face to face before the Game Design Challenge started. Our talk was quite interesting, and I'd like to have similar discussions with you in the future.

I didn't get a chance to play Calling All Cars. I was looking all over for it at the PS booth on Friday, but people were playing Resistance: Fall of Man and flOw on the PS3s. I asked the guys working there if they had CAC for play, if at any point during the convention, but they said "no." It wasn't until I read Ben Foxworthy's post just now that I realized CAC was sharing a machine with Jenova Chen's game. The fact they didn't know the game could be played in the first place sucks, though.

Shifting gears a bit, I just saw 300, which now makes me want to play God of War II even more. The movie gives me that same feeling for "I'm gonna kick some ass and scream loud, manly roars!," which I've only gotten from movies like Gladiator and games like God of War.

    Looking forward to both games!

    ~ Carlos

Just wanted to say that I can't wait for Calling All Cars. Also, I keep hearing everyone say who they think should play Kratos, so I'll put in my 2 cents. Nathan Jones. He's something like 6'10" and around the same build as Kratos. He's been in movies like Troy (he was the huge guy that Pitt had to fight). I think he would fit the part very well.

someone said they wouldnt mind a black guy playing Kratos somewhere up there^. well i would care. it was based in greece. is there even black people in greece?(now or back then) and he was white in the game and so was his family. so if they fuck up the movie by changing everything im not going to see it.(if the movie ever actually happens)

  28. Anonymous8:53 AM

To those guys who think Kratos should not be played by a black man....

Maybe you are mistaken that kratos was white, but did you not realize he was covered in ashes? And in the few minutes you do see him in plain skin, he does look a lot darker than a typical white man.

I can't imagine the pain in your hearts when you guys find out who did the voice work for Kratos in the GOW games...

"is there even black people in greece?(now or back then) and he was white in the game and so was his family. "

No there weren't black Greek people back then nor any now. The few from modern days are recent migrants in the last twenty some years of migrants from none European countries such as African and Asian and they are of mixed origins. Plus Kratos is a SPARTAN. Spartans were never 'black' and did not admit none Spartans in their mix. So this casting a black guy as Kratos the Spartan is ridiculous dumb.
