  2. I had a question about how the feedback from the focus testing is handled.
I understand what you meant when you said that you won't radically change your game based on the opinion of only a couple of people. But what about the other persons that also assisted ? If focus testing goes really bad, can producers (or other non dev major actors) use it to pull the plug on a project ? Or is focus testing only used when the project is almost completed ? (as a way to target marketing).

Loooove your blog btw. Long time reader, first time commenter. ;)

Not watching the inaguration at all. It is absolutely overblown. Besides I didn't watch the previous ones either.

  6. Just recently found your blog after the Kotaku video podcast you were on. Very cool seeing someone involved at your level taking time to talk about what's going on.

That said, the focus group brought to mind a thought. Since you, and others like fourzerotwo, are becoming more involved and connected with the people that support your games, it seems there should be some way to harness this power into a new style of focus group to augment and work along side the traditional ones.

For instance you could have people sign up for some sort of list which they agree to allow you to send them small sets of questions from time to time similar to what would be asked in a focus study.

You would then have an easy to manage system to periodically poll people that largely make up the target audience of your product.

Just a thought, keep up the good work.

do you really think people are going to track you down if they found out which hotel in santa monica you are staying in?

is your sense of self-importance really that overblown?

  12. "Oh no whats the hotel" That was great! :) Man you have some determined fans if they were trying to read that thing from the last post.

I would not read into it- there are folks who are a bit rabid, not so much about me but as getting a way into Sony for pitches and such and the last thing I wanna deal with is a call at 10Pm with someone asking for advice or contact names- not that I am opposed to helping fellow game makers out but there is a time and place, you know?

Not arrogance- sheesh, some folks are so dying to play that card with me. Just fucking chill on that shit.

    David

ps. not signed in cause on a diff computer that doesn't have my cookie and I can't recall it.

You can always tell which games were purely based on focus testing and ignored a creative vision. They tend to all be exactly the same. Why? Because, as you said: the focus tester doesn't know what they want. Just what they've liked before.

I agree with you on the focus testing.I mean i am not a developer. But I think the opinions of the people you are making the game for are important.I was just as excited about the inauguration.I think most all of America was.We need a new great president.Someone to help the us get back on it's feet.I really hope Obama is that president. It's great to see a new face in office.I hope good changes start coming soon. And thanks for the insight on focus testing. It's cool to get kinda a insight look on how this stuff works. How are you doing with the ps3 hardware.I know alot of developers complain that it's hard to work with.

Not to stir up any controversy, but Jaffe, you being as liberal as you are, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the current situation in Gaza. I understand if you don't want to answer that question but given your background, culturally and politically, I was really wondering what you think about that situation. It would be awesome if you actually responded.

  27. Interesting stuff on the focus groups, I guess if someone with creative control and a strong vision of what they want to achieve uses them for fine tuning, rather than being steered by the tide of the lowest common denominator they're going to be a valuable tool.

As for you not looking like a rock star... haven't you ever been told how much you look like James Dean Bradfield?? You could be twins!
