Like a Pig in Shit

So I was just looking around my office and I realized it's a total pig stye.

Ok, it's not THAT bad (I mean, it's been worse, for sure) but it sure ain't clean.

But right when I started to get the thought that I should clean the place, I realized that I take comfort in a messy space when I'm in my creative zone. Right now-with the game- the team is really starting to gel and we are making great progress on all fronts. When I am in that phase of a game's development- where tech solutions are getting locked down and the pipeline of play mechanics and new art is FINALLY starting to flow into the realtime database at a speedy pace- for some reason, my work space tends to get really, really messy. I think it's cause- clearly- all my energy goes towards focusing on the game experience and the experience of real life takes a back seat.

So here I sit with my 3 day old Diet Coke cans, coffee cops from Einstein Bros Bagels, the massive empty box my new dev kit was shipped in, and the GOD OF WAR framed art that I took down to show someone on ichat and have yet to put back on the wall...and it makes me happy. Like a Pig in Shit, you know? I like it because it signifies where we are at in the game and I like it because it just feels good to be surrounded by all this stuff, like a warm blanket made up of pop culture artifacts, bad-for-me drinks, chewed on pencils, and pictures of the games and the kids that I've helped to make. And I really, really like it :)

Anybody who's knee deep in something they're working on is going to have that cross to bear- pigsties at a work station only mean you're putting your elbow grease into your work. Keep it up Dave.

i get like this too, i think it's kind of along the lines of OCD but in a positive way? HAHA. like.. instead of OH DEAR LORD my surrounding space must be in order so i can feel comfortable its like OH MAN... i think it needs to be MORE messy!! bring in the powdered donuts!

thanks for working so hard on this game, i treat past twisted metal games like religious artifacts and, after following your blog just as religiously since before you were even working on it, (whether its a twisted metal release or not) the game you come out with will probably be carried around with me like a teddy bear.

p.s. question? you were contemplating playing Dead Space a while back, i know youre busy as hell but just wondering did you ever get to try it out? i am fan of the game and am on my 2nd playthrough and i think the story and most of the gameplay is actually pretty entrapping =D

i want to hear what you think about it (even if it is in the future)

Haha, know exactly what you mean...if it's too clean it feels too nice and artificial. Messy feels like home and home is comfortable.

For myself everything is messy I know where everything is, but when
i finally clean and organize stuff I tend to misplace and lose things. Go figure. If you want I can make your office even more "creative".
Keep up the good work.(It's a sequel to Mickey Mania isn't it)

Holy crap, Dave owns a iMac. G5 model too. I have the G4 model with the revolving monitor. (the slang term for this one is the iLamp.)

Finally a solid look as to what the other half of that room looks like. You see a mess we see creative juices at work.

Oh and thanks for posting the Kevin Smith interview. I can't stop watching them. Kevin Smith is the most compelling director that is out there right now by opening himself up and revealing that he's down to earth and real. You just don't see that out of Hollywood.

I don't see a mess. I see art. :D

now imagine what it will look like when you are done with the game.

Please make a PSP game I would love to see what you could make for it.

Also have you seen PSP Go, Getaway, (comes out in 2010) Syphon Filter PS3 version, Dark Cloud 3 2010 game, WILD ARMS, Silhouette. Sony has so many great PSP and PS3 games coming out in 2010 and if you have not seen these you really need to soon.

Even Level 5 and Sony are looking at bringing out True Fantasy Live Online to the PS3.

This E3 is going to be great for Sony.

So like I have been saying in my other posts the new Download only PSP is going to be sweet and a David Jaffe PSP game would be great to go along with it.

It's alright though man. It's your work space & it gets cluttered. Mine isn't like that but I have tons of sheets scattered on my desk(mainly study sheets, music sheets & projects, blah blah). I personally the work space in your pics is a typical one- the 3 day old cans of DC.

Dave, i don't know what are your beliefs but with having that messy room in which you are most of the day is not good. Energy flow is disturbed and blockage is created, this creates negative energy that is around you and affect you on daily basis. You work, your mood in negative way. It is important to keep everything in place if you don't want this

Just caught Bonus Round part 3, too (thanks for the heads up, PezQ).

I used to quite like Geoff Keighley as an interviewer and presenter, but his habit of interupting and misinterpreting everything is really getting extremely annoying.

Interviewee: It's like so-and-so and...

Geoff: Like this-and-that!

Interviewee: No, Geoff, like so-and-so which...

Geoff: You mean x-and-y.

Interviewee: ...Shut up Geoff! Let me speak, Gods Damnit!

I mean, it's not like the majority of the things that are said need further clarity. The concepts are already quite clear and straightforward. And all that happens is the issue is further muddied.

You're just the presenter, Geoff. The people are here to listen to what the guests have to say, not listen to your interpretations of what you THINK your guests are trying to say. Keep it schtum.

I ate at Club 33 one time. A family friend got us in; I forgot how, but I do recommend going there if you can. The food is very good, but fucking expensive. When I went it was about 40 bucks a person. But that was probably my most memorable visit to Disney Land. Good luck getting in.

Just watched the bonus round. Boy was that I great segment. First I really enjoy Jeff, Practer, and you. I respect all of you and your roll in the industry (I miss Jeff on "The Spot"). When Geoff brought up squeals your face was priceless. I bet you can't wait to announce your new game whatever it might be. (But I did LOVE the feeling and mood of TM:B) I also watched the interview that you had with the Hip Hop Gamer, and I have to be honest I did not like it at all. The content was fine, he just is annoying, I love hiphop and the culture (I'm a DJ myself) but he sounds like he's trying too hard to elude to that lifestyle and not being real. I don't mean to be putting him down I enjoy reading his articles but I'll think twice before listening to him again.

just saw an interview with you, you're a real honest dude. I gotta respect that.
