Has to be one of the best documentaries in the last five years, my favorite since Hoop Dreams. Also, while its different than most, easily best videogame movie of all time.

I was agreeing with you in the comment I made in the previous post. I don't use drugs. I didn't say there was anything wrong with it.

You misunderstood me and went on a huge rant which I saw as clouded by emotion.

I've been a huge fan of you for years, but your arrogance and almost anger when simply arguing a point has really urked me.

Talk about changing perspectives.

I wouldn't even know where to begin if I even had interest in drugs. Please forgive me for agreeing with you... jesus christ.

David Jaffe said...

Well given that you post as Anon and there are like 80% of folks commenting under that name, how do you even know I was talking about you?

REZBLUE said...

Oh man that guy was so funny. I felt so embarrassed for him every time he talked.

He might as well have had his lips surgically sewed to Billy Mitchell's ass. Would save him time probably.

I was posting under 'Griffo' when I commented.

I assumed I was grouped among the mass of commenters who were ignorantly oposing you.

Even if I was arguing against you, can you blame the kids for listening to what is drilled into their minds? You act as if they had a choice.

Abstract as fuck: but were all the children in the Hitler Youth Nazis? That was their upbringing.

Anyway, you said that one poster said that they didn't need drugs to be creative - that' pretty much a rephrasing of what I said. I said that I find it easy to drastically shift my perspective already.

I can see you just skimming over that bit and not taking in what I was actually saying. I wouldn't expect you to fucking formally footnote all your references with accuracy in a yt video.

I doubt you'd even be able to remember yourself if you did see my post as one you were responding to.

Whatever. Even if you weren't, I was still taken aback by your response vid. D'you expect a creative person who was born into a strict family to actively seek out drugs in order to be able to come up with original ideas?

I know you will deny it, but you implied that it was so by saying that you read about someone thinking they could be creative without taking drugs, in a derogatory tone.

Again. Fuck it, that's another thing I need to add to my ridiculous list of things to do, apart from appreciating as much original creative work as I can.

If you're so sensitive, and think so deeply, why can't you sit down and take the time to just CONSUME the stupid amount of work invested in something like Let the Right One In?

...

David Jaffe said...

I don't use drugs for doing my work. I very rarely use drugs at all.

All I was saying- and I don't know if I was specifically responding to you or some of the 60 other comments- was this idea that 'I don't need drugs to be creative' is an elitist, holier-than-thou bit of posturing that I feel has gotten momentum under the 'DRUGS ARE FOR LOSERS" PR campaign and it's a piece of PR that I call bullshit on.

A- I never said I needed drugs to be creative. But the idea- if you have never used drugs- that one feels they are in a position to judge the experience is a load of bullshit.

b- you can not shift your consciousness with your own mind the way a drug can. I'm sorry. No more than you can be hungry and THINK yourself full. It's a physiological issue, not an issue of will power or inner strength or moral fiber.

And don't do drugs! I'm not telling people they should. I am just calling bullshit on the folks who want to act like those of us who HAVE gotten something positive out of the experience are weaker willed and if we were just stronger and better people, we would not need those 'stupid ol' drugs' and we could get all we want and need from good, old life as it is!

That is what I was saying.

Hope that clarifies.

I bet you think I'm annoyed just because you didn't watch the whole of ltroi now.

I'm going off on a tangent now, but I remembered that you enjoyed Knowing recently. It might be more entertaining, but sit through that without complaints, and I don't see why you can't sit through other films.

I sit through EVERY film which I start to watch. I try to watch every film which I hear about. I know, I'm pretty much torturing myself: not in that there will be bad films, but in that I will never watch them all.

Even the worst film has SOMETHING worth watching. A line, a prop. I don't care. Someone put the effort in somewhere, and I aim to sit through shit to find all of it.

I wouldn't even see these things, or point them out to you or anyone, but since I'm typing, these are the hypocrisies which I perceive.

Does it matter. No.

Now I'm the one who sounds angry.

David Jaffe said...

Wow- you have a lot of time on your hands.

If I get bored with something as frivolous as a movie or a video game (much as I love both mediums) I move on.

Let the right one in bored the daylights out of me. So I stopped watching it. KNOWING entertained and held my interest, so I kept watching.

I have MUCH better things to do with my time rather than capitulating to some unproductive OCD that forces me to finish everything I start.

Griffo said...

Okay, I posted before reading your reply.

I was mainly angry because of the thought of you having read my post and having lumped it in with the rest of the anti-drug posts. I won't lie by saying that I'm not still estranged by the anger that I saw when you were talking. I know you almost always speak like that when making a point, with passion, but now that I felt I was one of the ones it was aimed at, I felt I could feel a whole layer of malicious intent which I hadn't noticed before.

Maybe it's just me. Misscommunication sucks eh.

If you like that shirt, you should check out the show Chuck. One episode this past season was based around finding the "Kill Screen" inside of an arcade cabinet of Missile Command. They really tie the geeky culture into that show amazingly.

Can't believe there's bleed over from the "Legalize" post in here now.

Seems like no matter what you post, or what you comment on, some people will always hate it, others will like it, and open minded people will just appreciate the viewpoint and good conversation.

Can't please everyone all the time.

Keep the great posts coming!

David Jaffe said...

Well Griffo, if you are one of the folks who DO THINK the way the folks I was aiming my passion/anger at in that video, then yes, you have a right to be insulted as I was insulting you.

Not on a personal level- you seem like a nice, smart person. But the belief that I was attacking IS indeed a belief that I feel needs to be attacked and if you hold that belief then your belief was indeed being attacked by me.

I have a lot less time than you'd think. I TRY to watch every film I hear about. I don't kid myself into thinking that I will ever actually acomplish my goal.

I have the sense to know that I have to stop something when there's something of higher priority which I need to do. But I will come back to it. Eventually.

And, I wouldn't have gotten where I am with that kind of OCD.

Juncti said...

Oh, one thing on that Nancy Reagan point.

I think she was very damaging with the start of the official "War on Drugs" which basically lead to the Mandatory Minimum Sentencing laws.

For instance in my state (Louisiana), possession within 1000ft of a school, park, public building, church, and a few other locations triggers the MMS law.

Most people see drugs near school and immediately think that sounds reasonable. But where in any major city would you be outside of a 3.5 football field (1 field is about 300ft)radius of one of these properties.

Now with the MMS, people that might have had some small charges and fines will do jail time. More jail time just feeds the cycle of crime.

Definitely time for some reforms.

Okay...I have no idea what this means. Did I need to watch a movie or something? :(

I'll post an essay I'm nearing on finishing named 'A critical appraisal of character development through gameplay in God of War II (2007)' here once I've finished it, so long as I'm satisfied with it.

1. I doubt you'll ever really have the time or motivation to get round to reading it or thinking about it.

2. I'll post it anyway.

3. Maybe this is the self-depricating artist in me, but I have a feeling the quality or triviality of the analysis might cause you to look upon it negatively IF you read it.

-So yeah, so that I can potentially connect with you in a way that doesn't bring up a subject which can cause arguments or misunderstandings.

I was hoping on sending it Barlog's way, since it might be more relevant to him. Just incase he has any remote interest. But (and this is probably the lack of effort on my part) I can't seem to find a way of contacting him, even on his blog, considering that only his friends can comment on his posts.

I love how the Donkey Kong documentary thread was turned into the drug thread.

Awesome, my brothers. Awesome.

But, since I didn't comment on the last one...

I've never done drugs, I'll probably never do them. But if alcohol can slip by, I see no reason why marijuana can't, aside from the possible initial phenomena of EVERYONE and their mother trying pot just to see what it's like, since it would then be legal.

Those are, once again, my two cents.

I loved that documentary, by the way. Good stuff.

I just love the way you jump right into a debate if you see it fit, David/Dave/Jaffe. It's quite fun to read, although I've never taken part in a Jaffe Debate.

Ok, I'm sorta with Griffo.

Didn't want to leave you hanging bro.

But I still have know problem with pot smokers. And I'm fine with it being legal. People will smoke it anyways if its not. I think it was 57% of California is in favor of legalizing it.

Griffo,

No one in the industry (or here, for that matter) wants your ridiculously trivial essay entitled 'A critical appraisal of character development through gameplay in God of War II (2007)'. Do you think this nearly three year late 'appraisal' will be viewed by anyone but yourself as a revelation. You seem like a lost little boy. It seems pretty simple to me. If you don't like the fucking topics then maybe go write a essay entitled ' A synopsis of bullshit no one truly cares about'. I'd proceed in showing it to your parents, to which they might tell you that it's time to move on in your life.

Don't cry about what a thread has become. After all, if I'm not mistaken... you were the one who brought it up on here to begin with. So where was it in life that OCD of yours got you?

I see. We should never look back at games which are - say - over 1 year old. That's the fucking short-sighted and simple-minded idiocy which leaves good games being taken off cunt capitalist store shelves after not selling ridiculous amounts on the opening day. And let's not forget the innumerable other piece of shit occurrences which that mindset leaves our industry in.

Okay, just to summarise. I'm a little lost boy who should give up whatever it is he is doing. Thanks.

1. I'm writing the essay for university.

2. I've written so many other essays on so many other topics that the fact that you seem think that I really value this one makes me laugh.

3. I said myself that the essay could be seen as trivial.

4. I said myself that it's likely they won't be interested.

5. It seems as though you've got no idea of the huge amount of game-based writing which is far more specific, and by your logic, would be even more 'trivial'.

Let's not think about our industry in any meaningful way at all and deepen the unartisitc and childish rut which other people perceive our industry to be in, eh?

The last essay which I wrote which was similar was graded as 1st class or a 1.0.

I guess I need to rethink my approach.

Now go fuck yourself.

Wow, this post has turned into a bitch fest. David, it seems anything you post will end up being critized by someone who doesn't accept an opinion. Oh well.

I've always wanted to see that Donkey Kong documentry movie, whatever it's called. It looked funny and got great reviews, I might look for it.

Griffo mentioned Let The Right One In, I watched that a couple of nights ago. If you're into your dramatic movies definitely check that out, it's pretty amazing.

I heard at GDC once you debated a schoolteacher about if video games have negative effects on gamers.
I just found out today that I will be debating a teacher on it. Can you PLEASE give me some talking points/arguments in favor of video games to use against my opponent? Itd be of great help.

*ahem*

Well, since this has turned into a drug thread, I thought I'd share my thoughts (considering I didn't get to post before)

I wouldn't think legalization of marijuana would be such a big deal if people would take it with a grain of salt.

What I mean by that is that I think if it was legal people would think it would be okay to do it all the time and become an extremely heavy user and basically crumble society. Think of how the effects of alcohol already has. I know some of my close friends would start doing it and think it's fine to do it ALL the time. I'm starting to sound redundant now because that's really all i have to say, lol.

Oh, and MrDaBucket, if I may contribute. watch this.

Tsk, I guess real life just isn't that interesting...Except for Brian Kuh, who will be eternally fascinating.
