Making Room For The New...

Cleaning up my office in preparation for the game's script/story work. I need to get started and finished this week and a clean office tends to help me focus. Also, given that my brother and parents were in town this last week and we were short on bedrooms, I pulled out my couch/fouton and slept in here. So it's just a total mess. Plus, prepping for a very focused, very busy 2010 and the best way to start is with a clean slate.

Usually when I clean I just tidy up, but there's a sense I have of needing to make some significant alterations; to toss and/or file stuff I have not used in years in order to make room (both literally and energy wise) for new things to come into my life. So there's LOTS of old design notebooks and research books heading into the garage.

Thought I'd share some of the chaos!

David

ps. oh the graphic novels are a stack I'm gonna take over and donate to the library, get some new geeks into comics :)  Oooh, wait, 2 of those are someone else's that they lent me! Phew! Glad I caught it in this post- had totally forgotten! I guess those are staying put till I see Mr. Foge again! Sorry Richard- close call!

Yo Dave, I'm glad you're back and I do appreciate what you've done and I'll hopefully appreciate what you're doing now, once it's done of couse!

Anyway, welcome back!

Do you own a copy of MW2 for PS3 as well?

Heeeeey Borderlands...how is that? Keep hearing good things. Been wanting to try it.

Dave since the 360 and the PS3 are wireless you might consider moving them somewhere off the desk. I've always enjoyed more tabletop space when working... to the point of taking up two desks at the library during finals week!

that was a bafta on your shelf. when did you win a bafta?

David Jaffe said...

I won one along with Cory Barlog and Marianne Krawczyk for the story for GOD OF WAR II. However as part of my holiday cleaning, all the awards our games have won- that I have here- have just gone into the garage. It feels right to put all the old successes we've had behind me and focus only on the future! Let's see if we can win some more :)

"started and finished this week"?

So you have less than one week to pin down the script?

May the muses inspire you!

Nah, already know the stories in my head- just gotta get it down on paper now. But thx!

I have a personal library you can donate one of those books to, Sir. ;-)

That reminds me....I need to clean my room >_>

Sounds like story isn't a major point in your new game. Why not keep the awards somewhere in your company? Like at the entrance?

I am not a comics guy (I love Manga though). I know Spider-Man is your favorite comics hero but what would be your favorite graphic novel?

not as messy as I thought it'd be. haha but it's really nice to see the office of a game designer at work ;)

Good luck delving into work... cuz that means we're gonna hear about it soon!!!

Mr. Jaffe, let me first SCOLD you for not learning about Jay-Z and the PUA community earlier, but you are a superbusy guy so I won't hold it against you. Hip Hop is so commercial now you can't avoid it, and Mystery and Style have taken the Pick Up Artist community to a national level. In the first picture I noticed you have the Syle/Neil Strauss book "The Game", which I read a couple years back and still ranks as probably the book I've read the most times in my life. Excellent read. Good luck with that Jaffe and may the force be with you. But your 'peacocking' could just be like, "Ohh yeah, I made God of War, suck it". Uhh yeah.

Anyway, I'm excited to have you back in the blogging world, we definitely missed you all these months. Glad you decided to just ignore the haters and still talk to your fanbase, you rock.

Great news hearing about the storylines in the new game. I would support it either way, you know what, but it would be too Modern and not enough classic "Twist". The story doens't have to be super polished like Black or anything, but story is DEFINITELY the driving point and the entire premise of the franchise.

This was a huge moral victory for probably 60-70% of us at TMA. Good luck this week, Jaffe, its going to be a very good week for your game, I have full confidence you can modernize this franchise and still keep the same classic feel we all loved in the mid 90s.

Sorry I'm bouncing off the walls,

SCOLD- hey! Great to hear from you.

Yes, that book is indeed THE GAME. I read it last year and thought it was quite good. Never occurred to me the VH1 series was connected till I started watching it.

As for peacocking...uhm, I'm gonna say no to that :) While I find the world fascinating, I'm not really looking to try to be a PUA. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE those skills. But it seems like a full time job and I already got one of those :)

BUT if you know of any women who would think designing video games is the equivalent of one of Mystery's Boas or some such, send them my way :)

Dave, welcome back and i have a question... tm2pc's hardware acceleration isn't working with some of the newer powerful graphics cards... it will say it runs in 12fps and then virtually crash... weirdly enough it did work with my geforce 7600gt, but then after i restored windows it doesn't work anymore... any idea what causes this?
