Jaffe: It's not an issue of disrespect to the troops. It's an issue of them riding on the sentimentality of people when they talk about how much they care and understand the sacrifice of the soldiers and then put out a sub par shooter that has nothing to do in the play mechanics or design with the sacrifice the soldiers went thru. It's all window dressing that shows either the team doesn't understand how to apply the history 'under the hood' and apply it to the play itself OR it shows that EA does not care about the message at all, and it's all a way to market the game./
ADAM: i agree that most of the finished products veer off from the original intent. it's big problem at EA for MOH

HALO is to Xbox what God of War is to PlayStation. Both games are greatly overrated and overhyped.
Anyone who's been gaming long enough, anyone who's played a bunch of PC shooters can tell you that HALO was just an average shooter.
Sure it had some extra polished bits.. but that it what happens when Microsoft throws boat loads of money at the development.
There is nothing wrong with HALO at all.. it is a good game.. people don't hate it because it is a bad game.. they hate it because so many people think it is some holy grail of shooters when the facts simply don't hold up that opinion.
I don't really like HALO.. played it for a bit and moved on. I will probably never feel a desire to play any further HALO games and that is that. But yes.. I am a PlayStation fanboy. I sold my Xbox when I finished Ninja Gaiden and discovered that Thief III was a huge pile of shit.
Yes I love my PlayStation consoles.. but I never felt compelled to play more than 30 mins of God of War. It was pretty, it had a neat theme, it had great presentation... aaaaand it just didn't have the gameplay to make me care about the rest of it.
Kratos doesn't grab me as a character, the silly flailing chains gave me this huge disconnect from the combat, button mashing minigame segments are a neat diversion and all and I liked the accompanying scenes.. but when I can go play Devil May Cry 3, Ninja Gaiden, Onimusha.. or even that busted ass Way of the Samurai (I appreciate your efforts Acquire.) there just isn't any reason for me to waste my time with the gameplay in God of War.
People can like these games, it doesn't irk me at all. I realize that not everyone is like me and has had the same gaming experiences as me. If Ninja Gaiden is too hard for you, and you can't just can't get over Dante being such a flamer, and samurais look like silly cross dressers to you.. then fine.. GOW might just work for you. Same story with HALO.
Just stop pretending these games are so bloody amazing when everyone is overlooking gems like Beyond Good & Evil and ICO and claiming that MGS is overrated.

Halo by no means sucks. The thing bungie does great with halo is make it about as flawless as possible. Gears of War has so many flaws in multi-player it made me wince to play it. But that's just me, thousands of people love Gears.

I don't get what the big deal is, people have been saying fuck Halo since even the first game, so what if some big time game developer says it.
Besides, the game can't be overhyped if it lives up to all it promises, right? If it ends up like Halo 2, then you have all the right in the world to knock it for not living up to the hype, but if Halo 3 ends up being GOTY, then what purpose is there knocking a game for no other reason than just pure fanboyism? I love Halo, it's my favorite shooter, but you won't see me knocking Half Life because it's had better single player campaigns in the past. Sounds like a lot of sour grapes to me. I don't like Microsoft either, but I love my 360, and both Halo games have been gold. Millions of people love these games for good reason.
I understand the criticisms that have been leveled, but for my money the Halo games (in both single and multiplayer) have been absolutely amazing. (I'm actually buying Halo 3 primarily for the campaign).
For the record, I do have Bioshock, and I'm badly addicted. This does not change the fact that I'll be attending the midnight release party the night of September 24th. The hype is unbelievable because this is why many people made a 360 purchase in the first place. This is what we've been waiting almost 2 years for.
So yeah, I do have a hard-on for Halo. That shit is sexy as hell, and if you don't like it play something else. (To the commenters, not Jaffe).

For anyone who thinks that Halo has no story, or that the plot is weak and unoriginal, then I guess five novels, a graphic novel, four comics and three games can't tell a good story. But seriously, to all Halo plot detractors, read all and play all of the above material before you voice your opinions on a weak storyline, because you haven't seen everything. Otherwise your opinions are flawed. Halo's story expand far beyond the games. Star Wars is a good example of a story far beyond just the movies. There are games and books based off it. If you can't read them all, at least read Halo: The Fall of Reach. That one should change your minds.

I used to like halo. It was a pretty good standard fps. But now I truely dislike it. Why? Because I work at a videogame store. I am just now noticing how overly-hyped halo is. People act like it is the greatest game of all time(which is far from the truth). Its kinda sad how people get into the hype and pre-order a $130 version of halo...$130 dollars. You can buy a fucking DS Lite with that money. Its fucking annoying that halo gets so much fucking hype despite there are many other games that are coming out in the near future that may be far better than halo(assassin's creed, metal gear solid 4, devil may cry 4, and army of two just to name a few). I dont know. I might play halo 3.....maybe...but I probably wont buy it unless its as good as its hyped up to be(which is almost impossible). I don't care what any of you Playstation-humping fags say. Halo is a damn good game, and it's been leading the way of the next gen sci-fi FPS. So many concepts and ideas from the Halo series have been stolen and twisted into perverse bastardizations of their former selves in so many games that I'm not even going to bother listing them.
The guys at Bungie put in a moderately enjoyable storyline [yes, I'll admit, it's not terribly enthralling] with a backdrop of terrific gameplay, visual effects, versitility and just a general fun game to play, but everyone wants to be a Halo-hater. That's just queer. Halo 2 has to be one of the best Xbox Live games even today while it competes with next gen games. And what other FPS shooter has so many awesome and fully customizable multiplayer modes? Like, honestly, the only reason I can see anyone not liking the gameplay of Halo is just because the first time they ever played it it was one of those experiences where they were at a friend's and just got inevitably and inexorably owned every time they made an effort and just finally gave up saying 'this is gay ', but what they don't say is: because I just kept getting owned, and that's no fun. Well, everyone's a newb at some point.
You can't compare games like MOH with Halo fairly, because they're two completely seperate styles of play in completely seperate timelines with completely different ... well, everything! And trying to compare it with Metal Gear Solid? Take that fucking huge chunk of a crack rock out of your pipe, they're two entirely different genres, and for the record, Splinter Cell slaps the fuck out of Metal Gear Solid with it's beautiful graphics, cool gadgets and way better play.

Other than the Half-Life series, I am Not particularly fond of any FPS's. Yeah, MOH: Frontline was cool in it's day when there wasn't a gillion other first person shooters flooding the market... I've tried to keep count of how many are being released within the next year, but it seems like there's a new one everyday. Halo's not a bad game, but I do think it is incredibly overrated.
I played both Halo 1 and 2. I honestly don't remember much about them, other than they were above average first person shooters with above average graphics, and solid multiplayer. The hype is insane. The fanboys that continue to claim Halo is the best videogame series of all time are insane. I've probably played atleast a couple of hundred games since Halo 1 and 2, and they've just got lost in the sea of games out there to me. That's my opinion. I'm sure Halo 3 will be fun, just like Bioshock is fun, and the Darkness is fun. People need to calm the fuck down, and ease up on the hype. Excellent marketing by Microsoft, though to produce superfanboys. I'm impressed with that, if nothing else.

Adam is very much so entitled to his opinion. So, Halo isn't his thing. That's cool and all. It's even ok that he voiced it. It's not mudslinging or slander. It's personal taste.

Well, I have the opposite view that David Jaffe has. I thought Halo 1 was a great FPS with a pretty engaging story but Halo 2 on the other hand was a completely derivative unoriginal unemotional piece of trash.
Halo 2 to me me alongside Halo 1 just does not seem to make any sense. Halo 1's story had it that the Elites were the primary enemies of the Earth intent on wiping out humanity which they viewed as some kind of plague upon the galaxy. All of this though was completely altered in Halo 2 which made the Elites nothing more than religious fanatic grunts thrown out by disabled elderly aliens and replaced by apes. Talk about ruining what could have been a great story.
Besides this, the gameply in Halo 2 did not really add anything memorable or worthy of notice and the cliffhanger ending left everything unresolved.

I have to agree with your view that a solid series has, thanks to unlimited funds and mutant powers of brainwashing, apparently become the source of our hopes, dreams, and ultimately, our very existence. Heh... I hope that Ian McKellen saved his Magneto helm, because this hype train is a serious mindfook. However, as a solid/great FPS with some interesting story elements, it does deserve props.
Now, Mr. Jaffe (lol), you have a great track record and I have enjoyed the hell out of Twisted Metal and God of War. But I seriously gotta say a few things and it's awesome that you have a real blog/forum for these discussions, not some glittering MySpace crap maintained in your name by a random intern.
In regards to marketing machines, you yourself would agree that God of War wasn't exactly a sleeper hit. It had unreal hype/praise/EGM worship. Tools who never played the thing rave about its epic storyline and amazing gameplay. And that brings me to the real issue I have with all the God of War hysteria. Again, I love the series and I've been artistically inspired by the sheer quality of both games. My ONLY gripe has nothing to do with the game, but rather one aspect of its well-deserved praise. I felt that no journalist/reviewer ever gave the proper credit to games like DMC and, to a much greater extent, Onimusha for their influence on God of War, at least without adding "but GoW actually has a storyline!"

Skill may not have been the Ideal word, but I stand by what I said, it is easy for a beginner to pick up and play and do well (Notice how both in my original post and this I never said they can be the best or great by just playing a couple of times, just that you would do well). This happens to a lot experienced gamers regardless of the genre or game. I'm not saying that’s a bad thing either, I'm just giving my Opinion (This is the key) of why it is liked so widely.

As for the “Skill”, quotation marks mean I'm quoting someone. Such as all the very immature people (not all people on XBL are immature) on halo who are sure they have "Mad Skills" and seem to tell you at any chance. And as I said in this post Skill may have been a poor choice of word. See how I didn't need to call you any names in my post. Try it.

Again I'm a Halo fanatic. I've read the books played the games (still playing halo 2) and will play halo 3. I just find the story a little...meh. Good, but not great. Hope you read this and at least, it took a lot of goddamn work!

I'm not gonna get in this mindless debate for very long.
I just have to say one thing:
What the hell is wrong with the people who think Halo/Halo 2's AI is bad? Seriously, Halo 1's is a bit outdated, but it's more solid than most games that are coming out now. Halo 2's AI hasn't even been matched yet (and don't say F.E.A.R., because that game had awesome AI parts and awful AI parts as well).
Also, to those who diss the story, it's not about the new, original ideas that it has; it's about the way they implement them into the game. Halo's universe is very solid and very deep, even if it is not the most original. It works well.
I agree with both of you guys and I am glad someone with some clout in the industry posted something about it. I wonder if the Bungie crew are actually on board with the circus Microsoft has turned Halo into, Or whether they are just ashamed their creation has just turned into an over hyped target of naysayers.
That said I am ashamed to say I may have to buy it so I can play with my friends. Even though I try and try to get them to play other online games like Rainbow 6 LV and the upcoming COD 4 (COD 4 kicks the shit out of Halo multi-player BTW) they just won't budge on their stance on playing only Halo.
I blame it on stupid people and their inability to stray from the bigger flock of stupid people.
The Halo story is original. Since when do you see other sci-fi storys with an artificial ring???

For me, I'm into Halo because I was a huge fan of Bungie pre-xbox. I loved the marathon games, and even now I boot up AlephOne when I'm in between new games (and thanks to the PS3, I'll be waiting until Spring 08 this time). While Halo is not amazing, it certainly is in the top 10 FPS I've played. Though I'd say Half Life 2 was better in presentation, story, playability, everything. Also Brothers in Arms takes the WWII cake for me, and the latest next gen just might keep it there (though they've added a max payne like kill animation that sort of kills the realism, I don't know why they are throwing it in there. They claim it helps immerse you, but I'd say it's more immersive to not be sure you killed an enemy until you're standing over them.)
But I whole heartedly agree these commercials for Halo 3 are way overdone. This game has more hype around it than the second coming.
And Jaffe, good luck handling the heated discussions in here, I do not envy you on that front :/

Console machines should be used for platform games and Car Racing games only, you wanna play good shootem ups, go buy a pc and play BF2142 or any shootem up that was made for the pc, not transformed from a console shooter.

As a perfect example of the rampant hypocrisy, where is the disguist over the Twisted Metal franchise's storyline? Nobody seemed to be bothered by it's pretty basic story. But there you go, would you want a grandiose, up-it's-own-ass story in Twisted Metal? HELL NO. It's about the gameplay, not the story, that's why everybody loves the Twisted Metal games 1, 2, and Black. Nobody said, "I have to play Twisted Metal 4 so I know the storyline." No, most people said, "989 again? Fuck that shit," and that was that. I honestly don't think there's anything to "get." It's just a sweet videogame with great gameplay with very good playing campaign and excellent, superb multiplayer. Now let's bring to attention the commercial which has sparked so much fervor on this board. To put it bluntly, it is a beautiful masterpiece that captures the feeling of a fictional war brought to real life. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with Halo, really, but I don't think the commercial is supposed to make Halo 3 any more epic or anything like that, but simply grab your attention and remind you that Halo 3 is coming out. As its own piece with no correlation whatsoever to the Halo brand, the commercial really stands out as damn near perfect for its production and direction, as well as the casting, acting (as simple as it is, it's extremely believable), and voice work. It actually is believable! I think the only detraction from the piece is that it is a commercial for Halo 3! Honestly, how many high quality commercials do you see on TV? Cuz this has been the first for me in quite some time. This commercial captures my attention, is compelling enough on its own values to make you watch the entire thing, and only then does it bare mention to Halo 3. And as far as Adam is concerned, the emotion this commercial conveys for veterans in this short commercial resonates much truer than the last 7 years of medal of honor games, which either simply try to cash-in on that feeling of respect and admiration towards veterans that people already had or simply have no possible clue how to convey their respect and admiration in any way whatsoever throughout their games.

Im sorry that God of War was such a huge hit that it didnt need any marketing like Halo does...aside from the goat sacrificing you assholes did. Ok here it is, I like a good old Fasion Alien attack, But all the games star some time years after the aliens arrive, And its cooo but i would like something like when they fist come to the planet, I think it would be cool to also have the No1 guy star from High School and get older Get into the military because the aliens kill all his family, That would be the reason why he hate the aliens, Something like 5 or 6 dudes, bodybuilders those guys from Gears of War would be a good models also Muscle magazine can do.

It's funny how MS gets the blame for Bungie being unable to finish the numerous items Halo was supposed to have in it. Everyone assumes that it was all done and ready to go by a simple tech demo done on a Mac a few years prior to its eventual release on the Xbox. Guess what, Bungie couldn't make up their mind on what to make. Halo changed so many damn times if MS hadn't stepped in and forced them to a release date we would probably be looking at a DNF product.

I think that the ad is just an embarrassment. Somebody here posted that is was brilliantly executed or something and that's just stupid. You've got an old man, who probably doesn't know what he's talking about (and might be embarrassed if he did) a few Lego figures and a tiny studio. Leaving out the message that the ad is providing, the production value i just at the bottom of anything possible.
I hope the people who think this ad is cool and that "Believe" is a great marketing claim are just teenagers.
I personally don't have a strong connection with veterans but i can understand why people especially in today's situation don't think it's ok. Come on, America and other countries are at war right know! How can you make a joke out of the people that died the last years??
btw: Halo doesn't suck, but the out-of-control-hype, the ignorance of consumers and the disgraceful Microsoft marketing campaign. Halo (as a series) is better than average. But the PC version of Halo 2 was a disgrace (noone can deny that) and overall the games still don't fell (or look) epic at all. MS wants them to be.

I'm just not excited about them.
It's always been very meh to me. The only designs I ever liked of the covenant were the Elite. Even the marines seem bland. Yes, I will bitch about how the covenant look all colorful and stuff. It is a nice change of pace from the usual alien designs(zergish, insects, robots), but they just oversaturate it so damn much I just get used to it instead of saying "wow, that's a cool lookin alien."
The AI is not as good as some others(F.E.A.R.). Although they are supposed to improve it in the 3rd game. Also I didn't find anything different about them in the 2nd game.
The story? Also very meh too me. It is just one of the those stories where I just don't care about the characters. Especially Master Chief. A character that has no...well...character. He's like a soldier in power-armor. Really lame and green armor. It's almost like Bungie wanted to do an everyman character where the personality is actually drawn from the player through choices made from the player like: deus ex, kotor and mostly everything by bioware (now there is a company that is overrated, no bad, just overrated as seeing they keep making the same damn game over, except now its in space or asia, but that's a different rant). But they don't! He is practically a nameless soldier! Why the hell do people give a crap about him? Spartan my behind! He's just a soldier in green armor that has barely any dialogue.
Apparently because Microsoft thinks that there people who haven't heard of Halo, they must bombard me with ads. I'm sick of them. They're everywhere. They're like a commercial that keeps coming on and on.

I think what really sets halo apart from the rest tho is online multiplayer, and the crazy things u can do in halo3 is gonna be copied in future fps games. Like being able to pause and rotate your camera during gameplay and also recording your matches and posting them online. That right there is revolutionary!

I think that people who don't really care much for the story obviously haven't checked out the books by Eric Nylund which add a new dimension to the experience.The books covers a much larger cast of likeable characters.
Alot of ppl that diss Halo don't even know about the hardships the Chief went through becoming what he is.
They also don't know anything on the history of the UNSC,Dr Halsey and the rest of MC's team that managed to survive and were involved in the Spartan II program : Kelly,Fred Linda and Will to name some.
The books are excellent and I'm 50% through 'First Strike'.
As for the games there still hasn't been any game out there that could rival the depth or the community feel of the Halo 2 online multiplayer on a console .Did u read that?"Multiplayer".
The halo 3 multiplayer will keep u playing the game for yrs. Halo 2 had me playing multi for about 2.5 yrs and I expect Halo 3's to keep me entertained much longer.

Well, let me say what Dave won't say. I hate Halo. Through an through. The dev team deserves credit for making something that caters to the masses in a way I've never seen. However, to me, there is nothing special about it. The game has a mediocre story line, derivative game play, and mediocre graphics. There is nothing that truly critically distinguishes Halo from the competitors. Halo is the best example I can think of of PR and marketing driving demand and breaking down the critical reasoning skills of the general populous. If you enjoy it, that's fine. However, it doesn't make me a Sony fanboy or Microsoft hater because I don't like the game. I like plenty of XBox games, but I think that Halo is a big fat steaming pile of so-so.

I liked HALO 1 for nostalgic reasons.
I liked the Ring World paintings from old NASA space books when I was a kid. That’s what sold me on the first the game.
Now so many things have changed about HALO... it doesn't have continuity.
There are too many inconsistencies between the Novels, Game story, and game-play.
I agree about microsoft's marketing. Seriously, mountain dew, come on you have to draw the line somewhere. But to tell you the truth, i am a big fan of the halo franchise. The story is mediocre but what i really liked about halo was the music and the combat. Halo had some of the greatest multiplayer available( halo 2 was another story). for me and my friends it was either super smash brothers, mario kart or halo. hook it up to as many tvs as possible and play until either our fingers hurt or we are out of beer. I hated halo 2 though, it just didn't click for me. I mean I had some amazing moments with halo single player. I was shooting a bunch of flood with a battle rifle and one of those floods that jump at you was coming down on me, flipped to the shotgun and blasted it out of the air. It was the AI that pretty much made me stick to the game.
The whole disrespecting the veterans is bullshit though. Every game disrespects them even MOH. Maybe not our veterans but what about the german or japanese ones. Most of those soldiers were doing the same thing our guys were, they weren't evil. they were fighting for the same reason, just on a different side.
I there can be better shooter than Call of duty 2 ?
