Haha... love the whiteboard. It looks as if they were trying to create a game with the "start here" and "chase to". Ah the good old days of being a child. So creative and unexperienced!!
I miss those days.

jaaaffffeeeee!!!!

you friggin cock tease! i know you can't talk about it too much but are you talking about the bullet time 180 manuever? or the car checking manuever? if you ask me man i wouldnt dazzle the game up with special effects out the wazoo. I mean I've watched the rolling demo so many times now. I cant see how that would fit into a twisted metal game. I cant see players relying something like that in the single player and then not using it in the multi player? (if thats what you're talking about) unless I'm totally lost in what you're talking about and mean something else. If it were my way I would have the game rely on a players total and raw skill level and not just imputing buttons to make for cool hollywood action sequence

Re: the VP pick -

As someone who isn't a Republican - more of a libertarian independent - but planned to vote for McCain in 2000 (not so sure this time around)...

I think it's a pretty lousy choice. I could especially do without the social conservatism.

Her lack of experience is no big deal, though. Nobody is ever ready to become President or Vice President - it's a learn 'on-the-job' kind of thing. I think it's a bogus thing to hold against Obama, too. I'm not saying she's fit, though - Obama can expand upon a number of points to support his policy decisions, which I can respect even if I don't care for the policies themselves.

From a political point of view, I think it's a lousy choice. This completely disarms the "Obama isn't experienced enough" argument (which, bogus or not, did have some traction). I really don't see an anti-abortion, socially conservative woman pulling in many former Hillary people, either.

I also imagine this woman getting her ass handed to her by Biden in the debate, but I may just be underestimating her. We shall see.

i wanted to add that you had mentioned something about wanting a deeper combat system in the game - and that tmb didnt have a deep enough one or it was two fast to pull off for most people. why not combine some of the weapons together? for example if you brought back the oil slicks from twisted metal 1- but instead of just making the cars slide out of control give the options of having the oil slicks be able to be ignited for extra damage. or have the ability to knock down buildings so they can fall on opponents for damage. well thats my 1 and a half cents. Im sure whatever you do will be good so just keep doing it.

oh one last thing...if there is talk about a twisted metal movie, paul w s anderson is not allowed to direct it, write screen plays for or even dream about directing it. he nearly killed full aut... i mean death race. haha have a great labor day weekend Dave!

2 things with the VP pick.

While it is a very small margin, she does have 5 more years xp in public office than Obama, however Biden has a lot.

She does however have a lot of executive experience, which neither Biden or Obama have any at all.

I think people playing the xp card will see that it would be better to have the xp at the top of the card rather than the bottom, I personally don't care.

I don't think she'll sway votes because she's a woman, but she does have the same firecraker attitude that people admire in Hillary, maybe the connection between the two lie there.

This has been a very interesting year for politics for sure.

One other point on the VP pick.

Just days after the DNC and leading into the RNC, no one is talking about Obamas speech at the DNC, it's all about Palin.

LOL! You said she's MILF :D Awesome.

Re: The VP selection

1) McCain needs something that will counter his "old man" image. You no doubt have read by now that McCain's camp is trying to portary Obama as a celebrity candidate. There would be nothing worse for McCain's image "old man" image than to select Mitt Rommey, Tom Ridge, etc. The selection of this pick helps shake things up a bit, including potentially helping, but not erasing, his image problem.

2) It's keeping with his self-claimed political "maverickness." Although his record indicates he is more conservative than he would like to admit, he has gone against his party on several conservative issues, and no doubt locked horns many a times with Republican leaders, both in Congress and in the party itself. This pick allows him to still claim his maverick position by specifically not picking a Tom Ridge or a Mitt Rommey, although a selection of Joe Liberman would have been far more stunning, at least in mind opinion.

3) Personally, I think that this puts Hillary supports in a difficult spot for the Obama camp. I agree with you that I doubt a majority of Hillary supporters will flock to McCain just becuase he picked a woman. However, the Obama camp has to be careful how tough they are in attacking Palin. If they release the hounds as it were, some Hillary supporters COULD, not will, but COULD take offense to it. They already saw it happen to their pick, and might not be too supporting to see it again.

4) Just as Obama needed a VP pick with experience to counter his lack of experience, McCain needed something to try and connect to the youth. Now I'm not saying this will win the youth vote for McCain, he will likely lose that. But this pick offers a far greater chance than a Ridge or Rommey.

5) The real potential for this pick is women voters, but not the Hillary supporters. Although one poll I saw, and people obviously lie on polls, but it said 27% of Hillary supporters claimed to have switched to McCain. However, I doubt the number is that high, maybe 10-15% MAYBE. Anyway, McCain knows that the political base that Bush has used the last 8 years, Republican and Independent males won't be there in this election. The real "in" that McCain is looking for with this selection is for the independent women voters. He wants to give them a reason to not just go automatically to the Dems, and instead give them a moment of pause. It's in that moment of pause he hopes soccer mom VP can convince other soccer mom's to give them their votes.

6) Finally, David, the biggest reason McCain made this pick, it strengthens his conservative credentials. As I'm sure you have read during the primaries the right, and especially the Christian right has worried about McCain's conservative credentials. If he doens't have the conservative base, especially the Christian right, he will have no chance. Palin is pro-life and pro-second amendment. The only major issue, so far, that she differs with McCain is that she favors drilling in Alaska, and McCain doesn't. The conservatives would probably not have thrown their support to McCain if the pick was Ridge or Rommey, and certainly not if it was Guiliani

Personally, I think Obama will win by around 5% points. It's his election to lose. It won't be a landslide, but in this day of polarized politics that's ALMOST considered a mandate. Not really of course, but the politicians try to make it sound like it is.

Either way, it should be an exciting fall election, can't wait to see how it will unfold.

Respectfully,

A Land of Lincoln Resident.

As someone who writes about video games you've given me a lot to think about David. I guess what you were rambling about roots back to one of my philophispies as a writer, that nothing is truly unique and your own design is nothing more than taking ideas that came before you and using them in a different manner.

For example, despite having no coding/artistic experience I have a habit of coming up with concepts I'd like to see developed into games. You'd be hard pressed to find a real 'unique' concept in any of these concepts. However, its the implimentation and combination of these ideas that can make for a great experience or a subpar ripoff of existing talent.

Not to dismiss those who claim to be doing something different than the major studios, its just the way I see things. Think about the South Park episode where Butters trys to think of a plan that The Simpsons haven't already done, everything has been done but thats no excuse to not do it.

I felt weird when he announced her as his VP. But I wasn't really sure why. I knew the reason why he picked her was for:

1.) She's young....even younger than Obama

2.) She a female

That's really it. But after thinking for a long time about it and looking this lady up, she seems intelligent....enough so that she probably knows exactly why McCain picked her. But my guess is that she doesn't care. Cause I think she's going to go past being used as a tool for votes and really be a fantastic VP that can make some major changes for the better.

I love Obama's charisma and I love the fact that he's a very methodical speaker, but I don't agree with several of his positions. I respect McCain, but I certainly don't like his attitude on war in general. I guess I need to read up on Biden since I know nothing about him....but the more I read and watch Palin speak, the more I'm starting to like her.....more so than McCain or Obama (and perhaps Biden...again, I'll find this out later).

Although I find Hanity amusing, I believe he would be happy if McCain picked an actual elephant as his VP. But unfortunately, now that I'm paying attention for the first time in my life (I can vote now), this is apparently politics as usual. It's amazing, I'm trying my best to read and watch everything that's out there and make an informed decision but everything and everyone is bias one way or the other....it's pathetic.

*already sick of politics*

Wait, about that first thing you talked about. I love hearing what inspired a creator's creation. I'm bringing this up mainly because you have Howl's Moving Castle on your blog (Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke rocked btw...gonna have to add that to the list along with the 3D Zelda games that you don't seem to care for too much when I say, "What are you thinking?! blah blah...anyways).

Miyazaki created a group in '96 to protect Fuchinomori Forest from being developed on. They wanted to build houses or something in the area. Anyways, that forest is where he got the idea for "My Neighbor Totoro". He wanted to preserve that forest so that future kids can walk through it and maybe be inspired too.

Now I know this story may be a little bit more magical than "I wanted it to look like a movie car chase!", but I still find both interesting non-the-less.

*once again*

Firstly, I agree with Carlton, don't allow Paul WS Anderson near a Twisted Metal or God of War film project. He can come on the set, but he's not allowed to touch anything or speak! Same with Uwe Boll.

I'm personally put-off by the whole, "We're inspired by movies" bit. When I played Twisted Metal, I didn't think, "Ooo, I'm living a Hollywood car chase." I felt I was playing something quite unique and interesting. Though Car chases may have inspired the game, the game itself became it's own monster.

I feel that when designers become so caught-up in mocking the Hollywood feel, they pass-up on potentially unique gaming experiences. I think video games are coming into their own world now. They don't need to emulate movies anymore. I think that trend is expressed by the fact some games have almost no cut-scenes. Most the stories are told in-game now. We're moving away from pans, rack focus, and edits-on-the-beat and starting to see fluid worlds that don't have to stop for a moment to tell a story.

I think making the player feel "bad-ass" is a noble goal, but not necessarily feel like I'm Indiana Jones. But if there's a sensation that one can capture in gameplay from Indy, then why not?

For an artist, I expect one to be inspired by anything. You can be inspired by a table, a new car design, a desolate location, or another medium. That's fine. But it feels like everyone is inspired by movies now-a-days. Why not just be inspired?

Now I think I'm rambling.

David said...

Well, I personally love hearing about the behind-the-scenes stuff about video games, sir. It's exactly why I love your games so much, especially that GoW 2 DVD that came with the game, plus The Dark Past video that's in TM: HO, and the video you posted recently, talkign about TM2. That was great, and don't worry, the camera adds at *LEAST* 10 lbs. :P

About Sarah Palin, I personally don't like the VP pick. Nothing against women, but I personally don't think it's gonna work. But like you, I'm thinking that I'm either missing something or they're just thinking positive about it. One of my fears is what's gonna happen when she's debating Joe Biden in the VP debates: that he won't be hard enough on her and/or she's gonna kick his ass.

Nice white board pic....I see that your kids are helping design the game, too. :P It's nice to have that touch, *FOR* kids *BY* kids....okay, maybe not *FOR* kids, heh.

Some of my favorite games of all time are inspired by films and when marketed I get even more excited when they compare the two. It makes it easier for the gamer to know what the game is basically if they read about it. Now if there is a good trailer then I don't really need these comparisons. To me its very obvious when I see videos for Half-Life 2 that its inspired by War of the Worlds and 1984. I think i'm well informed enough to get what the designer is going for. But I don't think telling us hurts. The noise does not annoy me.

First time commenter. Long time reader. (love cliche's)

Im currently majoring in video games in college and i find it very helpful to hear what inspired the creation of a game. In the limited amount of games/idea's ive done in school its usually just as stevie j said that you combine elements of games you've all ready played to create a unique experience.

Now ive been really proud of my creation's and they've been largely successful in exactly what i was trying to do. However modeling a game after certain Hollywood movies can by and large limit your design space if you will. You feel like you have to add those "cool" elements even if they dont work or feel pushed. A game needs to flow and the game's various elements cant be pushed. As the game's needs arise, so do its elements. There is nothing i hate more than when they shove certain features at you and make you use them.

As a final comment about Twisted Metal and its initial design, it feels like when the game was created its initial idea was very much from a child's perspective. I think all of us as little boys imagined cars that had weapons on the front so we could chase the other cars around (that happen to be in our other hand) and play out our mock battle. Twisted Metal very much plays on those feelings.

On VP selection

Palin is strictly a gamble. Obama is way ahead and McCain cant have a "safe" choice. Losing the election by 1 point and losing by 15 points is the exact same in politics. I feel like its a huge mistake and a gamble that will ultimately prove to be fatal. When all the convention/VP stuff is over Obama will come out with a 3 or 4 point lead and then blow McCain away in the debates. How often do you see McCain mess up everything he says publicly? Almost as much as George W does. Not to mention its Kennedy and Nixon all over again where you have the handsome, young, tall candidate standing next to the short, old, ugly guy. Politics is all about face value.

Hey David hows it going,

If by Intention of Games, you mean all the dev diary videos studios are making I think its just a way to drive the hype up for a game.

In most cases studios can't show everything about the game so its another way for them to hype the game and sell the idea to the public.

Probably and usually, most hardcore gamers combing through the web looking for a fix will watch these videos.
- Thus ensuring that they in turn go out and over hype the game to others.

i dont think the game needs to be a blockbuster hit in order to warrant a deeper look into the inspiration behind the game.

however, i AS WELL, am a little tired of movies being the main inspiration for so many games.

i mean, its okay, but i just think there are more interesting places to draw inspiration from. i mean... draw inspiration while you're driving down the road late at night, from what you see. draw inspiration from a day at the go-carts, or something.

i think that drawing inspiration from places that AREN'T stories told by other people results in much more unique game design.

that said, i don't mean you shouldn't draw inspiration from movies, and books, and other games, but don't exclusively draw inspiration from there.

and when asked where you got inspiration from, tell us about the driving down the highway inspiration, NOT the "i watched a cool movie" inspiration.

you know?

You question her experience, yet you think Obama is the greatest thing since Jimmy Carter. *rolls eyes* Palin has more executive experience than Obama. This is a fact. Obama was a frickin' Community Organizer, then he ran for the Senate. He was only present in the Senate for 1 year before making his bid for the presidency and starting his campaign. He has far less experience than Palin, and he's at the top of the ticket. Dems need to pick a fight they can atleast win, because their desperation is starting to show. Don't question experience when your top ticket is less experienced than both of the individuals on the republican ticket.

Just my 2 cents.

VP Pick

I'm a Republican. I'm not exactly thrilled with the Palin pick. I'm even less thrilled with Bush's performance in the last eight years.

I think it was more of a strategic move to pick up the evangelical and conservative votes. I don't think McCain was counting on the "Hillary votes" to come in by picking Palin. But I bet McCain and company will just look at whatever Hillary voters that do cross over as gravy.

Palin is way, way to conservative for me on some social issues. But I'm thinking about voting for McCain anyways and just hoping he doesn't keel over.

I wouldn't rule out voting for Obama but he has yet to really show me anything other than he's charismatic, delivers a great speech and uses the words "hope" and "change" a lot.

This election is a high-speed goatf*@*k.

Well Jaffe, here you go, an attempt at justification.
Personally I don't like the fact that 40 MILLION abortions have been performed since Roe v. Wade. And if you haven't looked at the numbers, such as what percent are due to rape/incest/or harm to the mother, then you owe it to yourself to check it out. (It's under 5% btw.)
I'm just not morally comfortable voting for a celebrity who would allow that. And, you do know that YOUR TAXES WILL GO UP... I mean, your still doing pretty well, right?
Just do this for me, watch how the libs and dems attack Palin. She is now public enemy number one. She has more experience than Obama, so want could be the motive behind such vitriol as in the Huff post? FEAR, that's what. Fear that relativism and post-modernism will be challenged.
Fear that morality may make a come-back. Fear that less abortions will occur. Fear that BIG BROTHER may never be realized.
Have a good night.

Maybe b/c Palin's young'n inexperienced (like BO) the Rep.'s want her to counterbalance. Some guy was taking a poll on a cup and listed McCain's seniority among his bad trait's and Obama's youth among his good. All these considerations: gender, age, race are worthless for determining who should be President. If the candidate had some physical illness that'd impair keep him bedridden I'd strike him from consideration but a President's ideas are used, not body. When Ron Paul w/drew no worthy candidates were left in the running so I'm not voting.
