BRUTAL COUPLA YEARS, EH CHARLIE?

Readers of the blog know how much I really dislike CRYSTAL SKULL and how crazy disappointed it made my inner geek. Nothing sums it up as good as this great fan (?) made trailer sent to me by long time blog reader and fellow game designer Arnaldo. Tragic man...just tragic. But hilarious as well.

ps. Yes I know it's just a movie and I should just stop whining already. Don't wanna. Indy is the main reason I do creative work today and to see him and his universe treated like this is not only annoying but really disappointing cause it probably means there will be no more Indy flicks. At least not any good ones.

pps. This directly relates to the work we do but I can't speak to how. And it has nothing to do with us working on an Indy game. I will tell you once the game we are working on hits the streets.

Did you see the southpark about the new indy movie? The boys go after george lucas and steven speilberg legally, for raping indiana jones.

I didn't get the joke till after I saw the movie......

I've never seen the movie (I had heard to many bad things), but that was hilarious.

Can't wait to see how it directly relates.

I am sure it won't be long now.

Especially if we are talking early 2010/ late 2009 title.

I am too young for the LucasArts era of quality entertainmenet. Well I played all the Monkey Island games, but that is as far as my exposure goes.

Sadly that institution stands for nothing positive in my eyes becuase of it.

Wateva man, Crystal Skull was great. Plus; I think since your childhood youve made Indy to be way too much than what he really is. Indy wasnt that great to start with.

Never saw an Indiana Jones movie ever so have no idea how this one compares to the rest. That trailer was kind of funny though.

I think you are bringing back an old game with more humor in it. Twisted Metal with it being more cartoony and funny?? We will see.

I still don't understand why everyone is all pissy over the vine swinging. Seriously... why does it bug you that much? It's just another set piece in another summer blockbuster. It didn't kill the movie.

David Jaffe said...

The vine swinging basically says:

Unlike previous movies in the series, we no longer take the world seriously. We are no longer concerned about any real danger in the lives of these characters...nothing is serious, it's all just goofy, hang out and chill fun. The vines and the fridge nuke are not simply kinda dumb set pieces that didn't go over. They are representations that not only have the series creators lost any respect for the world of Indiana Jones, but they've lost respect for the audience as well. I promise you, if any of that kind of dumb shit was in THE DARK KNIGHT it would have killed that movie. Hell, if that kind of shit was in SPIDERMAN 1 or 2 it would have killed the movie. It's not about the movie being dark and depressing (I don't want Indy to be that) but it IS about the movie taking itself seriously enough for audience members to invest in the story as an actual story versus a travelogue of what Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford did on last year's summer break.

In a movie like THE MUMMY series, it works. Because that kind of over the top, pull a rabbit out of a hat plot logic has been established from the get go. This logic has only really occured in the Indy films once before (Mine Cart leap in Doom) and movie goers laughed in a bad way when that happened.

It's not about over the top, other worldly stuff happening in the series. That is all over the place. But there is a difference between other worldly stuff that is tied into the fabric of the story's reality and stuff that feels like someone came up with a gag and didn't filter it thru the story process but shoved it into the movie just cause.

Yes I think too much about this stuff. But not really. I mean, I love the movies, I love games, I love stories. I would not be doing my job as a content creator OR as a fan of the medium if I didn't care as much as I do.

Maybe you just don't like Shia Labuf(/spelling), You didn't like Transformers & seemed to be really dissatisfied with this Indiana flick(which btw I was to).

Would you rather of had Indian Jones IV not made at all? I liked the movie but I don't deny the really stupid parts. But there were some awesome scenes in there. Could it be a combination that Indian IV could never of lived up to your expectations? Just some thoughts I wanted to ask.

Anonymous said...

My exact thoughts, the movie was terrible and the premise even worse.

You didn't like Transformers

Transformers was an absolute horrible flick.

Nice explosions and cool CGI, but that's about the depth of that one. It was about as good a Resident Evil; a movie that also sucked.

Also, can we move away from the ADHD editing? Cutting a shot every 10 seconds doesn't make the movie seem more intense, it breaks the links between shots and the tool of someone who isn't that good at what they do.

I agree- One of the good things you can say about Crystal Skull is, even tho the action was not that successfully creative, you could follow what was happening; you could understand the geography of the scene, you know?

And Transformers has grown on me ALOT since it's been airing non stop on cable. And I wanna see part II very much. But yeah, while I dig M Bay's style, I thought the 'comedy' was way out of place and the action was confusing.

Not to mention: where the fuck was Shia running with the All Spark at the end? What value was there in reaching the top of some skyscraper with it?!?

He was trying to get it to DA CHOPPA. That way it could turn DA CHOPPA into a transformer and crush everyone inside.

You think that the cart scene in Doom was the only "pull a rabbit out of a hat scene" in the 3 previous Indy movies? I think this demonstrates the point Ive been trying to make. Since you and all the other Indy fans have grown up on it, you guys have made it out to be waaay much more that what it really was. Indy has ALWAYS been goofy and silly. The only difference is you guys have now grown up.

David Jaffe said...

Anon- I've heard your argument before and I think it's a poor one. Name 2-3 rabit out of the hat Indy moments in the first 3 and I will happily explain how-to me- they fit into the story and fabric of the story in a way that makes sense and does not break suspension of disbelief.

Your argument only holds water If me and peeps like me can not buy into ANY over the top scenes in any new movies. But I saw THE MUMMY 3 recently and it had dragons and Yeti and dead warriors from thousands of years ago coming back to life and I had 100% no issues with it...

...I saw Journey to the Center of the Earth recently and had no issues with dinos inside the Earth and an entire world inside the core of the Earth...

...I promise you, my issue with Indy has nothing to do with my being too old to just kick back and have a good time at silly, fun, summer flicks. Those are my fave KIND of movies...

@ da criminal

Both the movies you mentioned were Brandon Fraiser movies.

Maybe you are just a Brandon Fraiser fanboy lol

/jk

But yeah Ive seen all the previous Indy movies many times and it didnt feel right. For me the problem I had was the constant use of CGI. Old Indy movies it always felt genuine no matter what they were doing because it was live.

Crystal Skull might as well have just been an animated movies.

A NEW BLOGGER COMING AT YOU:

I'm going to have to agree with the Jaffe crew consensus here. It was not the same Indy. I could take the aliens story line no problem and even all the geriatric jokes, but once Indy starts to be catapulted from atom bomb blasts and the only thing he needs is a little scrub down . . . COME ON! Really. A bit much. Even for a man whose seen the still beating heart of a victim pulled from his body. And the monkeys. (shudder)

Though, I've noticed this whole homage to previous cinema that Lucas seems to try to interject into his films, especially his Star Wars prequels. It brings a kind of strange post modernism that I don't think works in the framework of popcorn cinema.

Not to stab at previous Lucas topics, as I know there are far more fingers in the pie when it comes to Indy, but my other example to this homage strangeness is the whole JarJar/ Keystone Cops ending to Episode 1. Unless you know the reference you're just going to be flabbergasted!

Good God, did I just use the word flabbergasted? How old am I?

Directly relates to your work aye ? So lets say your making twisted metal ps3. This indy would relate to twisted metal ps3 in 1 way.... that your both using new tech. And it relates to you in that you dont want to make a game that sucks. Like Lucas and spielly did to indiana .... I think im right on the money prove me wrong :O

So how many times did you watch this terrible movie that you despise so much, again? ;)

Anonymous said...

so what's the christian bale hate all about?

Anonymous said...

Personally I would rather they wouldn't have made Indy IV and not soiled the reputation of the series. There was one, only ONE, laugh out loud moment for me in IV while the rest was a waste of time. David's first response nailed it.

Didn't originally care for Transformers but it has also grown on me. Without Shia (who I read ad libbed the funniest lines), watching the Transformers doing there thing and gawking at Megan Fox it was just okay.

for me, Indy IV "jumped the shark". I suspect Lucas and Spielberg were trying to stay relevant and in doing so made Indy look absolutely ridiculous. Even for this new treatment or reinvisioning of the character, some things are just down right silly and unbelievable. Swinging from a lamp and crashing into a speeding vehicle without breaking his back I can swallow, but surviving an atomic blast at ground zero by sitting inside a shitty little refridgerator makes me think of the Fonze in leather boots and water skiis...

Maybe it's the inverse Star Trek movie rule, and the odd numbered movies are the best. It's easy to dismiss the old ones as stuff that seemed good as a kid, but every time I give myself the chance to fully absorb Raiders of the Lost Ark, it's a genuinely beautiful piece of work.

It's a visual feast, a great, compelling story that ticks all the Saturday morning cinema boxes. Great performances, top of the line cinematography, a brilliant cast. If it's on anywhere I make a point of watching it, and wherever you happen to jump in, it's instantly accessible.

That said, Temple of Doom was a big let down when I saw first saw it, and, while I like it a lot, Last Crusade had a LOT of silliness.

I wish Crystal Skull had been a better movie, but, tbh, it could have wound up a lot worse, so I'm sort of counting my blessings after the Star Wars Ep 1-3 debacle. Lucas should really leave his shit alone. Or make Howard the Duck 2.

You know when I first saw the nuke fridge scene; I couldnt help but laugh out loud. Not because it was genuinely funny, but because I just KNEW that grown up Indy fans would just be totally like "What The Fuck!!!" lol
