YES!!! I love ASIA, especially Heat of the Moment. I wasn't around in the 80's to hear it, I got it from 40-Year Old Virgin, but it's like my favorite song.

80's FTW!!

Damn, I wish I was from the 80's, I love so much music from that time period.

Also, interesting factoid, my cousin was named Asia, after the band. haha

I was born in 1989 but I love a lot of the 80's stuff. War games is one my favorite movies. I thought ASIA was pretty cool after listening to them on 40-Year Old Virgin.

Ahh... the 80's.... I miss running home from school to watch GIJOE, Transformers and Thundercats... snarf...snarf...

I was born in November, 1989, right when the 80's were about to end! Kinda feel like I missed out on a really cool period, but that's life, and hey, the 90's were pretty good too, especially for gaming.. Though the music I use to listen to was pretty awful.

wow impromptu but all good.

Yep, I'm a 70's bambino but I grew up in the 80's and it'll always be my era.

I download all the 80's music vids from the 'toob.

great stuff

I was born in '78 but through my youth growing up in the UK i didn't really notice much of the prog rock as it was drowned out by pop music. I now have a huge appreciation for bands such as Rush, Jethro Tull and Yes. The good news is that there are bands today that use sounds and album art in a similar way and draw influence from late 70's - 80's bands. David, please consider listening to Coheed And Cambria, Tool, Opeth (album Watershed) and Mastodon (album Crack The Skye). Somehow i missed Asia so i'll make it my duty to give them a shot.

[continued from 12.55 post] If you could recommend any other rock/prog bands, old or new, that would be great. I warmly remember being about 8 going to the local leasure center with mum and being let loose in Jungle Jims before pumping £££'s into Spyhunter and Double Dragon cabinets. Aaaaah... :)

I've been on this kind of kick for a while myself. While I don't have kids so I'm not on the same path as you are with your reminiscing. Here is one idea about it I have that you might enjoy.

I see these flashbacks almost as a mental time machine. I just recently moved back to the area (within a few blocks) of the house I grew up in. Every now and then if I'm around it I'll drive by the old house and each time a memory will come to mind as if it just happened.

Most recently I took notice of the house next door, they have this brick walkway up to their house unlike the flat cement of most other houses around there. I can remember going down my driveway, over the sidewalk and up that pathway and turning around in the little hot wheel bike or whatever it was (the almost entirely plasic 3 wheel thing). I could even hear in my mind the clapping sound the hard plastic wheel would make on each brick.

So it's likely that you seeing your kids playing in the grass gave you a flash back to a time when you were that age playing with friends in a similar manner.

The more you're perceptive to the situations around you, the more of these types of fond memories will likely come to the surface.

The 80's, for many including me, is the golden years of innovation and the unpredictability of that decade, which made those years great. In particular video games and tv.

However, I can relate to your second blog video where your curious about what types of memories your kids will have. I often have those curious fascinations of what other people experienced and what they're background history was like, especially my parents or the elderly. No I'm not having a Marty McFly moment in where I want, or desire, to live moment by moment of what my parents went through, but I find it fascinating what type of history people experienced. It adds character to who we are and where we come from.

Enough about that. Let's talk about the 80's. Jaffe what was your favorite television shows back in that era? A-Team, Small Wonder, Soap? lol yeah right.

The 80's brought us Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, the first NES, and other stuff that was beyond my radar. (I was born in '87, represent!) HOWEVER, I seem to not be the nostalgic type but if I am, it's usually a hodgepodge of things from different eras, mostly the early 90's. I grew up listening to Seattle grunge so in it of itself is a little nostalgic for me.

Griffo said...

99 red balloons means something to me because I played Vice City when I was 12. Now that I think about it, it is very depressing. Seemingly, my generation have little-to-no culture or era to call their own. It's evident in these posts here too. What is special to our parents and elders seems to have been repackaged and sold to us as though nothing interesting and worth remembering will ever be created again. Maybe the 60s 70s and 80s really were amazing and revolutionary. I wouldn't know for sure since I wasn't alive then, but it is strange to me that the stream of inspiring culture and atmospheres seems to have stopped right when I was born. These days, though music is officially deceased, games and films feel like they are doing meaningful and new things again - more so than in the 90s - which is a little redeeming.

But nothing will give me back my childhood, in which I could have created fond memories. I'm 18 now, and with the depressingly insignificant era which I have lived through as a child behind me, it feels very uncertain that it will change in the future.

Maybe because we were made to think that the latter half of the 20th century was so amazing, we'll just regurgitate that into our children's mouths too. Can't wait. If I do have children (it feels extremely unlikely), at least I know I will make an effort to see that it doesn't happen.

I'm not accusing you of propagating this, David. I'd just like to voice my opinion on this subject, since it's being talked about.

I guess I'm going to have to create my own culture.

sorgriffiths said...

Now all I listen to is Joy Division, The Beach Boys, 99 red balloons and soundtracks of the few films which I appreciate. What a sophisto. Fight Club defines my generation, which leaves me surprised that a world-wide revolution has not yet taken place.

sorgriffiths said...

I am extremely nostalgic, to the point where I am deeply sadened to see my actual level of productivity. My hard drive is clogged with things which I have made valuable through nothing but my perception. I keep doodles, believing that they will be interesting to look at in times to come.

We have the internet, which allows me and my peers to wallow in our own apathy, which is only stimulated and added to by its startling vastness.

Miguel said...

@ griffo

I fervently disagree. I'm only a couple years older than you, but maybe it's the few years between us that makes our opinion so different. I think it's almost impossible for any era to not have a culture. I remember looking back into history (i.e. the 70's, 80's etc.) and thinking about how different society was back then, the clothes, the music, everything. I was just remenicsing with my friend last night about things from our childhood that seem bat-shit weird, or corny to us now. I think the farther away we move from our childhoods, the easier it is to see how different things were back then and how things change.

But anyway, David, I love it when you post things like this. I've been pondering alot of things lately considering human existence, passage of time, all those bullshit time wasting thoughts.

I thought it was interesting how you were discussing how you see certain quirks in your kids' that they've gotten straight from you. It's funny to see someone analysing the behaviour of their kids, because I can remember hearing my parents do the exact same thing to me when I was a kid. There were probably things that they understand more about me on one level, because there's that whole part of me that I exude, but don't realize. But I can remember hearing things they'd say and thinking "What are they talking about? How'd they get to that from here?"

I know exactly what you mean, though. I remember significant little things (at least significant to me) from my childhood and I'll bring them up to my mom or dad and they'll have no clue what I'm talking about. I think it's a testament to the humongous difference in perception between adults and children.

I'm only 21, but because of South Park, and to an extent 40 Year Old Virgin, I know of Asia, and I really enjoy Heat of the Moment. :P

David, I am still young and I do not have kids of my own, but I know exactly what you're talking about in Video 2. I am extremely nostalgic, and I recall fond memories of my past more often than I probably should. Many times I wish I could just jump back to the early '90s and live that era once more. It was epic.
Anyway, before you even got into what you were saying in vid2, I knew what you were trying to get at.
Not too long ago I was thinking of something similar to this. Dunno how it came up in my mind, but I got to wondering if I would ever be part of someone's fond memories. Someone like my good friend's little brother or my girlfriends younger cousins. Kids. Something that they could look back on and be like "Yeah, I remember that. I remember him!"

I guarantee you that if I ever have kids of my own, I will have the same sorts of thoughts that you had running through my own head. In fact, I already DO have those thoughts when I'm hanging around someone far younger than I am. Will they recall this day in X amount of years and remember me?
You are witnessing what your kids perceive as just having fun in the grass, but what you're seeing might become a nostalgic memory of theirs that they'll think back on in 10 years. And if it's ever mentioned to you, you can say "Yeah, I remember that!" And you'll also know that as that specific moment in their childhood took place, you were thinking about how just another day in the yard could turn out to be a memory they look back on and think "Ah, the good ol' days."

And it did.

Welp, I don't know if I made a point here or not, but I just felt the need to reply because I, too, have these nostalgic thoughts as well as the thoughts described in your second video. Cool.

I've, strangely enough, heard of Asia.

And no, I've never seen the 40-Year Old Virgin, so I have no idea what that's about. I listen to a lot of classic rock and such, so I've listened to them more than once.

I absolutely adore nostalgia. I love it. Sometimes I wish I could just go back to where I was say, even 5 years ago or so, and just watch myself and "relive" my life for awhile. Is that weird? I dunno, but I just wanted to put that out there. I think about nostalgia and such quite a bit. Hell, for all I know, in several years I may be nostalgic for this moment where I was thinking about nostalgia on a blog post about nostalgia, haha. Would that be full-circle or what?

Wow, how ironic... things you described about your oldest daughter are very similar to myself, if not identical and I've always been that way my entire life.

I was born in 1988, and obviously I don't remember anything about the 80's because I was too young, but if I could jump in a time machince and live through any Decade, it would be the 80's hands down.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City also gave me somewhat of a greater appreciation for the 80's because I really loved the Soundtrack in the game and the whole "80's vibe".

See Jaffe, there's plenty to talk about, it doesn't have to be only about video games :) I really enjoyed it.

why do i envy you so much, not because you are a video game designer, i just don't know, jaffe, i think like three of your articles have at least brought a tear to my eye, and i don't know why

Thanks for the ever lasting memories of our childhood was like. I love Gus' Hot dogs and Aladdin's Castle.

I usually go down memory lane when I am with other people from Birmingham, everyone from Atlanta does not give a shit about Bham.

I also see elements of myself in my kids. I love it. Let them be themselves and remind yourself what a kid used to be. It is worth it everyday.

Great post David. I totally get what you're saying. But I like to listen, so i'm sorry I have nothing to reflect upon in this post. lol

& W00T @ Asia. That was a fucking great band. Heat of the Moment is also a song I remember listening to growing up(I'm 21 though)

& yeah i've been listening to Kanye West specifically since he became the new face of hip-hop. What a trip of old school he brings as well. But for hip-hop it's all about the 90's for me.

I'm pretty much like you. I take in every source of music. It has to be good though.....fortunately I love music period.

David Jaffe said...

CleanN- nah, my music doesn't have to be 'good'. :)

I am known for liking/loving lots of music many folks consider simply bad. I love Phil Collins, still like some songs my Chicago as well. Much as love me some Kanye, I'll still rock out to Styx as well as a bunch of 80's adult contemp music (which was pop back in the day) :)

So don't throw in with me, my friend. I got taste in music like a dog's got taste in sniffing other dog's assholes.

And no, I have NO CLUE what that means. I was just looking at the picture of commenter sghiotto's dog while I typed that and it came to mind :)

David

David Jaffe said...

Ah Dan! Where'd the years go, eh?

Ah well, hopefully you- like me- are introducing your kids to some of the finer things in the nerd universe, like comics, games, sci-fi, and geek girls :)

You going to the reunion this summer?

David

David Jaffe said...

Wait...I don't mean I am introducing my kids- who are girls- to geek girls...I meant...ah hell, never mind. Ah fuck it, I don't care if they turn out to be lesbians anyway, long as they are happy! :)

...What the hell, Dave. Do you want a shovel do help yourself dig or what? :P

Styx was amazing. Though I can't 100% say that about Phill Collins... lol, it's kind of kinky but the mix of orchestral/jazz instruments does it some fair justice. Though, no fan here. Ha!!

My mother has a collection of ASIA vinyls, and as a kind I always stared at the covers, found them so great... sadly, I didn't know how to play them on the turntable.

It was only when they anounced that they were coming to Chile (my country) that I started listening to them, and oh my god, so many years wasted not listening to them :)
