Prepping For Our Press Event

As some of you know, Twisted Metal gets to be seen and played by many of the gaming press this coming Wednesday night! Along with a whole host of American journalists that we are super excited and grateful to visit with, SCEE is bringing a heaping-helping of European writers to the event as well! We all know that Twisted has never been as big of a hit in the European territories as it has been in America. Hell, has it even ever been considered a 'hit' at all over there? I really don't think so.

BUT we feel with this version of the game we have a shot at substantially increasing the number of Twisted Metal fans all over the world! And this event is a great opportunity for us to reach out to these potential new fans (as well as inform and entertain the amazing fans we've already got).

So as you might imagine, we're very excited- and a little bit nervous (which I take as a good sign...kind of like butterflies in your stomach before you go on stage!)-about the chance to present the game to all of these very important people (the press that shows up and the gamers who read the press afterwards).

Anway, I WAS going to fly out to Utah last night so today Scott, Kellan, I, and the team could sit and tune driving physics, ramming damage, weapon damage hit points, and a whole host of other valuable tweakers and sliders. However, I hung back to work with Sony San Diego on some videos we will be showing to Wednesday night's press before each level/mode that they play. Sort of like what I did here at last year's E3 breakout session:

I thought this video- which we never intended for anyone outside of the press to see- did a great job of letting people know some more of the more intricate, tactical, meaty details of the game.  I was surprised-but very happy- that Giant Bomb captured and posted this breakout session.

And that got us thinking: because we're doing three more of these types of videos/presentations for Wednesday night, we should make sure they get filmed so after the press is done reporting what they want to from the event (we ain't gonna scoop the press at our own press event! :)...) THEN we'll toss the videos of me speaking OVER these 3 new videos onto the net.  Should be good: the press (and man, we hope they like what they see and play) - along with these videos being available to those who want to watch them- should really give people a great, thorough idea of what this game is and where it stands.

Sad part is, in order to get the videos locked, it means I have to stay in San Diego and do remote tweaking sessions with the team today. Remote tuning works great BUT it's nowhere near as fun and satsifying as sitting with the team and making the changes in real time.

ANYWAY- all that preamble and set up just to share this:
This is a part of the email that Scott and Kellan and I are using today to discuss outstanding issues still unresolved for the Wednesday night build. It also has a list of things we want to tweak and tune before the doors are forever closed on this particular press build.

So I just wanted to share a little behind the scenes 'making of' stuff from my perspective.

Ok- week is gonna be nuts! May not get to chat till after the event. Will take pics and write up my impressions of the event for an end of the week post, for sure. But if we don't get to talk before: have a great, safe, fun, productive week!

Talk soon-

The most wanted game on PS3 this year! It's the most powerful game on PS1 until my PS1's optical pick-up died for this game(T_T). Is there any method people can join the test or beta for this game? Or will you guys host a event in Sydney,Aus. It will be such an honor to see a group of greatest game developers cause I am a huge fan of this game!(Just type some ideas and notice what you said, lol)!

1. Cool to see a designer actually being able to play the game he's working on. I'm always surprised about the number of designers that suck at playing their own game. I guess you don't HAVE to be good at your own game to actually MAKE a good one, but I still find it cool that it actually looks like you know what your doing :)

2. The game looks really cool and true to the "unreal meets street fighter"-comment in the beginning of the video. I'm not a big MP-gamer (which is a lie now that I think about it, I play NHL and FIFA 1-5 times/week with my friends), but this looks interesting.

And lastly: Just finished GOW 1 - da HD remix (yo). A bit late, I guess, but I really enjoyed it. The combat was solid, the story was told in a very entertaining way and I loved that fact that even though the game is linear, it felt like I was exploring. Very nice. And thanks for blogging again. I "lost" you and Ragnar Thornquist (from Funcom) about the same time; Twitter got the best of him. But now both are back, yay!

Ahem. So yeah. Long comment. Much love from Sweden!

I've said it before, but I'll say it again - You're the fucking man, Jaffe. Can't wait to play this game and I know it will own. Thanks for the blog posts, too.

Thanks for sharing this information. It's really fun and cool to read and not many people like to go behind the scenes. The more I see things like this, the more I want to be a video game developer.

That video Giantbomb put out was by far the best video I have seen on a game. It got me more hyped then any game trailer ever has because it showed the direction you guys were going and showed the flaws the game currently had. I can't wait for these videos you are planning on releasing to hit.

My most anticipated PS3 game by far. I sure as hell going to be very impressed and amazed for what's going to happen tomorrow, the day after tomorrow and beyond.

The game looks fantastic. I do have a question that I hope would get answered. With the destructible environment and the verticality and the more hidden areas, how do you balance this level of depth and detail with accessibility?

thanks. The game is looking great.

I so want those giveaways for the press event and doubt I will be able to participate since I work tomorrow evening. Those items will be on the market later, right?

I always wondered about TM in europe, BLACK didn't get much of a chance due to the removal of all the story cinematics for PAL, and 3 and 4 never came out here, so im never sure if it doesn't sell because of these things, or if sony doesn't put an effort into the thing cos it doesn't sell regardless.

Happy b-day Jaffe!!!!

There might be a financial crisis soon, the way a lot of experts are talking. People may not be able to afford your game by the time it comes out. I would release it early before it's finished and perhaps finish it later as a free patch.

David you make me feel like a teenager again. That trailer with the cutscenes was like seeing the trailer for the ultimate twisted metal movie. BUT ITS A GAME I CAN PLAY THATS FUCKING AWESOME.

I've gone through half a pack of smokes watching that trailer, everytime the logo comes together the hair on my neck stands up.

Hi Dave it's been a while since we last talked.

You don't remember me but I remember you lol I hope you like that Saw reference.

But seriously I met you when you were trying to find ways to talk to a lot of people on your blog.

God now I really regret selling my PS3 because the one game I wanted is coming out after all.

Anyway I have you have a good time and please sue Microsoft over Scrap Metal.

Everything's looking awesome from what I saw!

It sounds like everyone is taking the fight to Calypso this time as opposed to wanting a specific wish? At least that's what the trailer led me to believe.

Juggernaut looks awesome, but a little overpowered. Looking forward to seeing more of the in and outs with this vehicle.

Keep up the amazing work, hope there's a beta soon. Been playing a shit ton of TM2 lately. God I can't wait for this game!
