I dont mean to be an ass but here I go, at 2:33 you said "...when he kills Otacon..." um...? ok?

Are you going to pick up Street Fighter IV David, I can't wait for that one.

Anonymous said...

You were spot on with MGS4, with the five endings that followed. Still an epic experience.

Flower had the same impact on me, leaving me in awe while I'm playing and after the level was done. Just sitting there totally enthralled for minutes after each level.

Jaffe, you should definitely check out Left 4 Dead, FUN FUN game. Just a great time.

Keep us up to date on Afro, love the show just hear the passing, and other issues that keep from trying it out with all these other great games out on in the market.

Doug,

I meant when Otacon has a breakdown when he learns the truth about Naomi...

David,

Keep in mind. It's the *LAST* MGS in the series. The last hurrah. Let it take al lthe time it wants. After this, it's done. Let an old man (no pun intended) have his time.

Now it's over. :)

I've yet to play flower, but I'm planning to check it out real soon as it does sound pretty awesome.

Btw Jaffe, I suggested checking out the steam game "World of Goo" in your previous blog post, and if you don't feel inclined that's cool, but here's a link to the demo in case you didn't read what I said then or was just too lazy to look on steam. You should seriously check this out man, and I would be curious about your thoughts on it. It has a 91/100 metascore on steam.

http://news.bigdownload.com/2008/10/15/download-world-of-goo-demo/

If you don't want to try it though, for whatever reason, then that's cool. Just think its a good game you'd be be interested in.

Anonymous said...

Also the demo should take less than 5 minutes to download if you have DSL or better.

Dammit, I wish I didn't watch that video. Now I've gotten choose between Flower and Noby Noby Boy.

Gazzo said...

Good post, good video.

But the one question that plagued me throughout wasn't why you felt that way about MGS4, or why you loved Flower so much, but rather, why the hell are you going to Disneyland on a Wednesday?

But to comment on the stuff that matters, I agree with your MGS4 opinion. My personal favorite Metal Gear game is easily MGS3. Metal Gear Solid 1 has the story for me, though. Great stuff. Great series.

Flower is a amazing game. I have went threw it twice already. It is very emotional like you said. It leaves you with serenity but also sad from it's message. It' so awesome to see such a new and fresh game come out. I hope it does well. I also agree with you on mgs4.I think it tried something games are not ready for yet. To be more like a movie than most games. The ending for me also was dissatisfying I think snake should have died and left his legacy. That's what the whole game lead up to. So David what game are you looking foward to for 2009. Mine final fantasy 13 if it comes out this year. And god of war 3 trailer the most amazing game I have seen so far. I can't wait to play it. Well thanks for the blog man. Such a cool way to interact with your fans. Chad

Kojima really made Otacon out to be a pussy! With that said he's still one of my favorite characters in the Metal Gear Solid universe. Why? Because to me he introduced the stealth suit in MGS1 which blew my mind, among other things. (zing!)

Have fun at Disney. I heard their redoing the Small World attraction, I'm curious to see what it'll look like when it's done. Anyways, enjoy yourself and be safe.

flower was awesome and u were right on! MGS4s last scene had me saying the same shit at my tv. GET THE FUCK ON! snake shouldve died and made the sacrifice like Aeirth from FF7. if u know what i mean? :-D the emotional part u feel from one of ur fave characters in a game making there final stand, but kojima did the game right. i still am a big snake eater fan :-P best MGS game IMO

Unknown said...

Do you think Flower created a new genre in games? Like...an emotional genre if you will?

I'm an MGS fan and I loved MGS4 too , but I agree with a lot of points you made about how things dragged on at the end and some of the cheeseball moments.

Hope you dig Dead Space , I really enjoyed it. It is a simple , but effective game imo. It's not really scary , but is has a way of building tension. Plus it is just fun to use those weapons and cut off body parts. The game looks great and sounds great.

My favorite 3 games from 2008 were 1. MGS4 2. Dead Space 3. God of War Chains of Olympus (based on what I played).

I've been considering a game like flower or Noby Noby Boy just to play something different than what I normally would play before seeing this , so I might got ahead and bite on that.Funny thing is when I was in Home looking at the video I was saying that the game looked pretty cool , but most of the girls in there were saying it looked boring. That was pretty interesting to me.

dude dont use "epic" and those fucking trend-words all the time, you sound retarded

Regarding the MGS4 ending, I really liked Big Boss's speech. No doubt, it's not for everyone, but I've become so invested in the mythos of the series that it was all just really interesting to me. Maybe I've just gotten used to long-winded speeches from watching so much anime. Heh.

I absolutely, 100% agree on Flower, it was an extremely well crafted experience, one of the best I've ever played to be honest. I can't wait to see what thatgamecompany has in store next!

Unknown said...

New to your blog and I love it. Great insight David. You made me chuckle at least a couple of times. I liked Flower too, played it a couple nights ago. MGS4 was great for me too, but the ending put me to sleep. Make sure you buy the annual pass at Disenyland tomorrow - great deal!

Unknown said...

Dave... Apparently you can still get L4D discounted.... at least according to kotaku. They said the sale was extended till today.

Anonymous said...

No wait!! What do you think about PoP??? Did you get to finish it? Dude you HAVE to play it if I recall you said you bought it. PoP is the shyt. Now I won't say more but, play it when you can.

Miguel said...

Uh-oh, Jaffe's having an existential crisis. Just beat MGS4, and now this? Coincidence?

grasshopper said...

I thought the level with the light...and the one after it, weren't that good. I thought it was the low spot of the game. Felt to gamey.
Anyway Dead Space was pretty good, I got bored and couldn't finish it...but for the first half I thought it was great. Loved the creepy vibe! :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks, by the way, for announcing spoilers ahead of time. I've been able to stop the last couple videos before hearing the MGS info.

DAVID, can we see what's in the picture frame to the left in the background? It looks like 4 game boxes?

Yeah....Jenova and Kelle are waaaaay younger than you. :P

Nice post, Mr.Jaffe.

i agree 100% about the ending to MGS4. i loved the game, and every MGS game, but the ending was kinda a let down. on one hand it was kinda cool that snake got to have one last talk with big boss, but on the other it seemed lame that big boss has been alive all this time. and the ending keeps going and going. big boss just kept talking and talking, he just wouldn't fucking die.

SonyJunkie said...

I agree with you about the MGS4 ending. I don't even remember it all that well cause it was long and dragged out. Still a great game, but didn't go out on a bang.

I really want to play Flower. I have heard that it was an amazing game and I just want to try it out. I need $9.99. :(

Every time I post, I am going to say this. I want to know what you are working on. You created my favorite game of all time. God of War. I have high hopes for you David. Doubt you will disappoint.

Shut up and bleed you motherfuckers!

Man, more and more I want to buy a PS3. Huge MGS fan, Killzone 2 looks awesome, MUST play GoW3, I mean damn, it seems to be a GAMER's console. Didn't think flower looked that great but after hearing you, Jeff Gerstmann and Brad Shoemaker talk about it, I must play it.

Quoting Gerstmann: "I was like the wind bro, I was like psshhhhh!".

David, do you think MGS 4 should be ported to the 360, cause i really want to play it

dawimp523 said...

Glad you finished MGS4! That ending was very dragged out! Thank goodness you can skip everything in subsequent playthroughs! I've heard that Flower was really good, but I'm also curious about Noby Noby Boy. I'd love to put some money in my account, but I always feel guilty when I spend my own money on downloads! If it's money from a prepaid card, then I have no problem with it. That's how I got Burnout Paradise, the MGS LBP level pack, R&C: Q4B, and Linger in Shadows! Now, I only have 7 cents left!

Also, what's your favorite attraction in Disneyland, Jaffe?

Vitter said...

hey david im a big fan of spidey, and i know u r too so, have you played web of shadows? coz i know they say it get´s repetitive etc, but it´s spidey i mean, i wanna give it a shot, even though in my country games are fucking expensive, like 78 dollars, and then that make it 3.5 times for my currency...

Brice Gilbert said...

First time I saw the end part that goes on forever I forgot about how long it was because the last minute or so was so great and touching. Then I played it again and holy shit does it take forever. What is it like 15 minutes in the same location?

Dead Space is awesome! I've been playing on my pc and I gotta say, I'm in love with it. Later

"MGS4 proves you can't tell a story in a game."

Uh, and your game... God of War... a DMC/Ninja Gaiden clone does? Both of you try to have this "EPIC!" storyline and both fall on their faces outside the fandom they have.

In short: You're a hypocrite. Doesn't matter if you like MGS or not and are trying to spin it to not seem to "hate teh MGS." You both are overrated and trying to pull off "epic!" stories.

jack said...

Dude, why don't you chill out first of all MGS fanboy. I would go anonymous too if I said something as idiotic as that. Do you not pay attention? Jaffe has said nothing but good stuff about MGS4. Do you honestly believe it is perfect? I felt no emotion either. It isn't even the best metal gear. I think people get so wowed by graphics, that they forget that there is something called a story that is supposed to pull us in. I would say graphics can contribute to that, but Metal Gear just gets boring after a while. You forget you are playing a game, but in this case, that can be a bad thing, because it just goes on and on and on. Not saying it isn't a great game, just gets dull by the end and is BS snake is immortal or something. They should have killed him off. What are the gonna make a MGS 5. I can see it now, snake goes stealth wheelchair. Pull your head out of your ass. God of War crushes any metal gear game anyway...anonymous guy.

Mokuu said...

Yo David,

I get the fact that you though the epilogue was long but you gotta admit, they FINALLY closed all the gaps inside the damn storyline. If you played MG1-2 MGS 1 to 3 then Portable, all the small gaps are finally closed in #4 and thats a feat that has RARELY been accomplished in game storytelling *cough*Capcomsyndrom*cough*.

Also i have to direct that towards the way you opened seismic story branches in the God of War 1 bonus videos and we still have no follow ups for em yet. Are they gonna pull a kojima in GOW 3, will they be left to drift in the void of time. Cause seriously, theses were very VERY ingenious ideas that have yet to really get picked up and concluded.
A point i have to give Metal Gear is that they literally gave you theses sharp plot holes at the end of the games during those mysterious phone calls, sinking more ambiguity into your mind until they wrap it all up in MGS4.
Yet you get major points for having not just one but 2 sharp plot points unlocked at the end of the game, i just hope that the team rolls on theses and successfully close theses plot holes.

Anyhow Street fighter 4 time, more broken capcom story...oh right Bison gets a new body, ill be sure to use that excuse for my bad guy's constant return.

Have a nice week and keep it real!

PLAY DEAD SPACE FIRST!!!!! left 4 dead has no feel. its not a game. its an A.D.D. festival for people that think Halo 3 is "in depth"

Anonymous said...

i completely agree the ending was dragged out

Anonymous said...

yeah, and i agree with the guy above me, left 4 dead has no feel, it just doesn't feel the environment is alive, same with all of valves games with the exception of portal, i think valve could learn a little bit from infinity ward

Anonymous said...

I was just thinking....
Maybe MGS4 wasn't so epic for you because you played it over such a long period of time. I, and I assume most players, played the game in less than a week (or at least less than two weeks). It could be like how one watches a movie all the way through, or stops for random breaks.

Anonymous said...

Don't do anything stupid. If you're going to get Left 4 Dead, it HAS to be on PC.

Alex said...

DEAD SPACE IS AMAZING!!! l4d can wait.

Anonymous said...

I'm a HUGE MGS fan and LOVED MGS4...but I agree the entire Big Boss ending was just long and drawn out and basically boring.

Anonymous said...

Just wanted to say that, for me, Metal Gear Solid 4 ended with the bang. Every thing after that point just didn't feel like Kojima to me.

Rock Lee said...

Yes, MGS4's ending felt like Lord of the Ring 3: Return of the King's ending.

It just kept on GOING AND GOING. Funny, LOTR and MGS4 both had weddings in their endings.

Anyways, I still feel that MGS3 was the best MGS yet. MGS1 is almost tied for first place because it was ahead of its time.

MGS3 was just able to tell the story in a way, kind of like MGS1, that wasn't convoluted. It was straight to the point, yet had twists. The music were brilliant(MGS4 lacked music). The bosses were amazing, like MGS1. The gameplay was hardcore.

MGS3's ending was pure awesomeness.
