JAFFE AT COMIC CON (aka GEEK CHRISTMAS!)

Readers o' tha blog know that I loves me the San Diego Comic Con. I eagerly anticipate those 4 days in July each and every year, sometimes getting jazzed for the Con as early as December the year before! It's a great, great show for people- like me- who obsess over geeky pop culture. And this year was no exception. It was a fantastic Comic Con.

My super bad ass assistant managed to get me into the Hard Rock hotel this year which- it turns out- is really THE hotel to be at during the con. Tons of stuff/parties/events always going on plus it's right across the street from the convention center (at 6am I'd look out my window to peep the already GARGANTUAN line waiting to get into Hall H).  It's also a great place for wall to wall geek celeb sightings. Dignitaries from movies, comics, and gaming were swarming the place the entire four days! Harry Knowels of AINT IT COOL NEWS fame, movie director Guillermo Del Toto, and little Scotty Evil (aka Seth Green) were all eating breakfast in the same joint as me! I almost ran over Marvel Comics editor in chief Joe Quesada while trying to get my car to the valet stand. I ran into game designer Cliff Blezenski as he was heading in and I was heading out of the lobby. And Scott Campbell and I had dinner sitting right next to Data, Jordi, and Troy from Star Trek: The Next Generation! Jordi even came over and professed his love for God of War!!! What's not to love?!?

I will say this year there was a lot more working involved during the con than ever before (meetings, press, interviews, design sessions) but it's hard to complain about that. I love doing that stuff and it's a great feeling to have a game coming out that people care about. That said, I still coulda used a non-work/no obligations day to just walk the floor and hit more panels. Perhaps next year!

Ok, so here's some shots of stuff I found cool/neat/interesting from the show:

Two of my faves: Freddy and Jason!

Hyper Violent, Super Bloody Star Wars! What a fantastic combo! Lucas should let the God of War team take a crack at a Star Wars game! It would fucking sell thru the mother fucking roof! Dunno if he wants his property all M rated but M rated Star Wars would kick all kinds of ass!

Mary Marvel! Circa 1940s! Love the old school/Golden Age look...even her hair was all 1940s'd out!

This was my in-the-back-of-the-room view, watching the Ready At Dawn team talk all things God of War. Good panel overall and the King Midas drag sequence is fucking FANTASTIC! I gotta say: really interesting experience to watch other people talking about a franchise and character that I had such a hand in. Not that I ever had any doubt- or any issues- that the franchise had moved on from me and was in super great hands, but this panel made that all the more clear.

Don't look at it Marion! Keep your eyes SHUT! And no, I didn't buy it. Not much of a prop/toys guy. I love that stuff, like to look at it, but I don't have an office full of it.

Speaking of cool props and toys: here's the amazing Sideshow Collectables Kratos statue! Isn't it great!?!? Man, I hope we can find someone to do statues for us for Twisted Metal! But this one, this one is just great!

Thought these Chrono Trigger little figures/action scenes were fantastic. I woulda bought those but they are not out yet. Man there is so much cool stuff at the con!

The extended Comic Con trailer for the new Nic Cage flick- Drive Angry- looks like a shit ton of fun! LOVE movies like this!

This was a GIANT mural of Marvel characters posted on the back wall of their booth. You can kinda see the two out of focus people walking by next to Hawkeye's bow. So you can see it's big! And there's more of it too! My camera would not capture it all. It's about 2x the size of this. So one day- when I'm crazy rich and living in a super cool penthouse apartment in New York City, I want this on one of my walls.

I was incredibly unimpressed by the stuff I saw for the new Thor movie. Looks like a SyFy channel original flick or something. And this is coming from someone who actually liked Wolverine Origins. But the Thor stuff just looks...dull? Cheap? But the CAPTAIN AMERICA flick- little I've seen- seems like it's going to hit the spot. Great director, great setting, great costume, great promo poster/art. Just the whole thing feels like it could really work. Fingers are crossed! But so...here's cap's shield. In some ice. :)

Get inside a box, make it look like the chicks are killing you. That's what this display was. Kind of cool. Ya'll know I loves me the horror. But I hate this shit is in full display to little kids, especially on the Comic Con advertised/promoted KIDS DAY. Either make the show adults only (which I am totally opposed to) or put the gore stuff in its own adults only section. Don't take the gore out- the gore rocks! But come on Comic Con, be a little responsible; ya'll should know better.

Saw this really cool book called MOVIES ARE FUN. It's designed like a kid's board book but each page depicts very non-kid appropriate scenes from famous drama/horror movies. Here's THE SHINING and SILENCE OF THE LAMBS! Loved this!

Man, I love old pulp sci fi! The concepts were just so imaginative and clever!  I mean, this image alone- what a cool ass set up for a story! Anyone who digs the end movies for the Twisted Metal games- especially TM2- can see an attempt at this sort of storytelling reflected in the stuff we do. Granted, our stuff is not as good as the classic stuff from pulp mags like this (duh) but I think with some of the TM2/TM:BLACK stories (as well as- perhaps- some of the news ones we are doing for the new TM) we are clearly taking inspiration from this sort of pulpy vibe.

Ok ya'll- that's a wrap on the con! Hope your weekend is going well! Gonna play some more Splinter Cell: Conviction (loving it!), type up notes from our Twisted Metal play test on Friday, take a walk with the kids, and get a work out in! Talk soon!

Thoughts from Comic Con

Hey- just wanted to pop in and say a quick 'hey' to everyone, post a few pics, let you know what is up.

So we had a fantastic panel yesterday- packed house! To all blog readers who were there, thank you SO MUCH for showing up. We were so surprised we packed it. I shit you not: I expected about 20 people. Ya'll are too kind.

Will be posting some pics of stuff I saw and loved from the show a bit later in the weak. Meantime, two things:

#1- PICS FROM THE LIVE ACTION SHOOTS

Here are some behind the scenes pics from our ending movies for the new Twisted Metal. Lots more work to do on the post processing effects but I think we're off to a great start!

NOTE: YES, Tooth is gonna have flaming hair. As you can see from all the green, we're going to be doing TONS of post effects on these, from adding in the backgrounds, to adding in props, to- in this case- giving Tooth his signature hairdo.

Image of PREACHER represents the direction we're heading in for the look of the flicks. Not done yet by a long shot, but we think it's off to a cool start.

NOTE: A good 85% of the shots will be dream like slow motion with Twisted Metal:Black style voice overs. To be 100% frank, that helps reduce the cheese that can sometimes creep into these sorts of game flicks. Some scenes that we showed for comic con may end up feeling too cheese for our taste and so our secret weapon is to slow it down, add the voice over while still seeing the actors talking but no longer hearing the cheese dialogue. Again, most of the slow mo shots were planned way in advance but just so you know: we're looking out for the cheese and if it creeps in, we have a way to eradicate it! :)

#2- WE HEAR YOU! :) - Scott, Kellan, and I went to breakfast today to discuss the overwhelmingly positive comic con reaction (as well as to get some design work done). We also discussed the fact that some of ya'll are not digging only seeing 3 of the Twisted Metal characters in the game (4 actually if you count Preacher). Two things to that:

a- please keep in mind this Twisted Metal single player and co-op will be more varied than ANY TM you've ever played. We are NOT doing GTA style missions or vehicle escorts and such BUT we DO have mechanics laid on top of the core campaign deathmatch that adds to the play varied so you don't get bored. We also have more bosses than any TM game. We also have around 35-45 minutes of live action and- when it's done- super cool stories in the game (more than- I THINK- we've ever done). So while you may be disappointed by the fact that there are currently no plans for Marcus Kane or Bloody Mary or No Face, please know that the one player/campaign game you DO get is going to be the best one we've ever made.

b- we hear you. We talked about it at breakfast today and discussed possible ways to address the concern. Can we make those adjustments to the game in the time we have left? Not sure, no idea. But for those who respectfully voiced your issue, it is appreciated, the development and publishing team is aware of your issue, and we are looking to see if there is anything we an do about it. No promises at all. But just so ya know, ya'll are being heard. And it's appreciated.

Ok, heading home to get my kids. I always have them stay over in the last nite of the con (they are still so young that they get a mega kick out of staying in a hotel). Then in the morning we're gonna hit the Comic Con Kid's Day! Gotta bolt- hope all is well!

Later!

COMIC CON...HERE I COME! Well...soon...if I can get enough shit done tonite......

Oh My God! It's 11pm and I still got a metric shite ton of stuff to get done before tomorrow! Sheesh!

Screw it- gonna go to bed and get up at 5am. Trying to work while running on fumes=futile and shitty.

A few things first:

#1- If you like, check out this interview I did with the very cool website mydvdinsider about our LIVE ACTION stories for the new Twisted Metal! Wha!?!? Did I just say LIVE ACTION!?! I DID! Can you believe it?!? We're kicking this shit old school, Jungle Strike FMV style! Except with no white tigers.

#2- 1UP just put up an interview I did with them about all things Twisted Metal. Please do check that out as well, if you please :)...

Ok, I think I hear the laundry buzzing. I shit you not: I have like 4 shirts right now that I just wash over and over. And like 2 jeans that I can still fit into (yes I'm putting on some weight as the stress of the game kicks in...man this sucks!)...so anyway, I hope I can find another pair of jeans I can get into and I'm not bumming around the con with nasty ass 2 day old jeans on :)...I really should go shopping but I fucking hate clothes shopping.

Oh- and if you plan on attending our panel at Comic Con- and I hope ya do- here's some info: We had some issue with customs in China and so we only got 100 masks to give away at our panel. Our room- Room 8- seats 350 but to be frank, I would be thrilled if we could get 50-75 people in there. I don't see us filling the place. So all you who plan on showing up should be taken care of if you want a mask. But just so you know, if you plan on coming and you really are dying for a Tooth mask, get there a few minutes early just to be sure. But again, I ain't expecting a full house given the competition we're up against at Friday 1pm. That's cool tho...it'll be nice and intimate for just us hard core Twisted Metal heads! :) We'll have fun!

Oh and the extra 1-2 thousand masks we HAD planned to give out at the con are still coming. Just need to figure out how to give them out. PAX perhaps? Not sure, will let ya'll know!

Ok-later ya'll! Hope all is well!

JAFFE'S PHOTO ALBUM

Being away from the blog for over a month allowed me to accumulate a bunch of photos. Perhaps ya'll would be interested in checking them out?  Hope so cuz I'm a-fixin ta share some pictures :)

Oh, I also plan to post a bunch of comic con photos in the next week. I LOVE blogs and websites that post pics from the con. There's just so much cool stuff to see and- if I may let the depth of my nerdiness be known- a handful of times during the year I'll get to craving the con and it's always cool to hit the net to remind myself of/relive the annual mega explosion of all things geek. So I'll get those up next week once the con winds down.

But for now, chex my random shit:

PICS FROM E3
We were so excited and grateful that Sony pulled the trigger and made a full fledge Tooth van for the E3 unveiling. What a great, fun way to make an entrance! This is me a few days before the show at a rehearsal for the press conference.

Pretty darn good replica if I do say so myself!

Interior was pretty bland. If it would have gotten any screen time at the press conf I guess we would have had to tackle what exactly the inside of Tooth's truck DOES look like. I imagine it like a serial killer's lair, with dead bodies stuffed into the ice cream freezers and hundreds of little hanging pictures of the neighborhood kids- carefully cut out from school year books- dangling from the roof of the truck on dirty little pieces of string; sort of like his 'bucket list' of the kids in the hood he's yet to get to. Man, that's kind of sick. What is wrong with me?!? :)

Just a few of the many Eat Sleep Players who made it to the show to promote our baby. They all did an amazing- and tireless- job of helping new players settle right in to the Twisted Metal experience. Thanks ya'll!

This was the ballroom of the Shrine Auditorium where we prepped and practiced our on stage press conference demo. As a film nut who grew up religiously watching the Oscars with my family, being in this room was a real thrill. This is the room where- for years- the Academy would host the Governor's Ball, the big, swanky first party of the night. This is the room where Spielberg celebrated after winning his first Oscar; where Cameron probably had to live down a shit load of evil eyes after saying he was king of the world. Not trying to over dramatize it- it is just a fucking old building- but for me, the whole dang place was just filled the ghosts of my childhood heroes. It was a real thrill to be on the same stage, walk the same halls, and pee in the same bathrooms as the movie directors that I used to idolize. But speaking of ghosts, man this building is old and dank and creeky and I would LOVE to spend the night in it with some ghost hunters cause you KNOW it's fucking haunted!

My view backstage a few minutes before they shoved us in the back of the ice cream truck and we hit the stage. I took this pic to remind myself how amazing the opportunity we were about to have really was; to remind myself how grateful I was to be in the position we were in. To close the Sony press conference, to be included among such amazing games as Killzone 3 and Assassin's Creed and Little Big Planet 2 (and many others), to be at a level in the industry that a game that I had a mega hand in bringing to life was now about to be presented in such a cool way...well, it's just hard not to take it all in with a mega sense of gratitude. You never know if the game you are making is your last game. You never know if the game you are making will crash and burn and in doing so never allow you to have such support and press and interest again. And so- for me- when moments like the press conference arrive, I really try to take it all in and process it and remember all the details so it really stays with me, so I really am living in that very exciting moment. Jimmy Buffet has a great, apropos quote: "If you decide to run the ball, just count on fumbling and getting the shit knocked out of you a lot, but never forget how much fun it is just to be able to run the ball!"  To me, right now, we're getting to run the ball in the fucking NFL. Will we score a touch down? Will we get our back's broken as we get slammed by the opposition? Will we win the Super Bowl? Who knows. But it is sure is fucking fun to run that ball.

Me and Scott meeting Sweet Tooth backstage, a few hours before the conference started. What a total thrill for me to see one of our creations brought to life. Love that machete!

Our little corner of the Playstation Booth :) Look at the line! The game had lines the whole 3 days which sucked for convention goers. But for us, it was great because it meant interest in the title, great word of mouth on the show floor, and people coming back to play the game again and again. When I worked for Sony it was cool to have a game I was involved in in the Sony booth. But now that I'm independent, it becomes more clear what an honor it is to be part of the Sony family. To have our game chosen to stand shoulder to shoulder with such amazing first party titles like Killzone 3 and GT5 and LBP2...it's just a cool thrill to be included in that line up!

Kellan Hatch, Eat Sleep Play's art and creative director taking a pic with our baby in the background :)

Close up shot of our booth.

MY KIDS LOVE CHARLIE
I had never heard of one time Youtube sensation Charlie The Unicorn until my kids became obsessed with watching it over and over and quoting the little web movie verbatim during mini van trips all over town. Heck, I really like it as well. Very PG rated South Park stuff, very strange in a great way. Charlie is now my oldest daughter's favorite character and so when it was time to have the grocery store cake maker put something on my kid's b-day cake, Charlie was the obvious choice :)

COOL STUFF AT DISNEYLAND

Had my kids at D-land last month and saw these very cool Hot Wheels style cars. Boba and Indy are two of my favorite characters ever created so to see them given the Hot Wheel treatment was pretty sweet. Didn't buy them because- as I've said before- I'm trying not to clutter my office with tons of toys (been there, done that) but they are still pretty cool. Maybe LucasFilm will let us put them in the new Twisted Metal!?!? :)

DEL MAR FAIR
Me and my brother took my girls to the amazingly big and fun Del Mar fair on the 4th of July. We had a total blast! Great games, foods, and rides! And since people didn't start flooding the place till the night (for the fireworks) we pretty much had the place to ourselves all morning and afternoon. So NO LINES! :) Here are two random pics:

For some strange reason, the Del Mar racetrack- and thus the Del Mar fair- has a small, miniature version of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor.  Readers of the blog knows how much I loves ma' Farrells! :) So I took a pic of the candy counter. Doesn't come CLOSE to the amazing relaunch of Farrell's in Orange County but this one is only a few miles from my house :)

What's this I see on my soda cup?!? Dennis DeYoung (original lead singer of Styx as well as the main man who wrote most of the band's classics) was at the fair this month?!? And what's this?!? He was NOT doing his own, original post Styx stuff (which is kinda...not great) but he was actually doing music FROM Styx! Oh man! And I missed it?!? FUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKK! Man I dig Styx! :)

THE ART OF DARK RIDES
Dark Rides- for those not in the know- are the haunted house ride-thru attractions you find at pretty much every fair in the country (world?)...some are lame and shitty; some are downright scary! Here is a great website about dark rides for those who are interested. But man, I just love dark rides! And there were a lot at this year's fair and I rode most of them. And the thing I love the most? The artwork on the outside of the dark rides.

Now I can't put my finger on the art style. I don't know if there is a name for it. Cynics and people who have lost touch with their inner 14 year old would probably use the word 'bad' to describe it but I say, 'fuck them'. I just love this kind of stuff. It's has this sort of this '70's/early 80's airbrushed-on-the-side-of-a-van' look that just really appeals to me. It's got this 'little kid, sci fi/fantasy, Heavy Metal Movie-Magazine, 2000 AD comic, Tales From The Crypt, EC Comics, music of Styx with the D&D lyrics of Zeppelin'  kind of mentality that I just LOVE so much. Anyone who has played Twisted Metal and God of War should recognize the same vibe because they are one and the same. Here are some pics of some of my fave dark house exteriors from this year's fair:

Check out the chick with the mega boobs up top. There's always this sexuality sprinkled in with the sci fi/fantasy stuff. Which I love. Just like God of War, it really represents that perfect balance when you were still a kid but you were also growing up. So you still loved the imaginative stuff of your childhood (dragons and sci fi battles) but you were also starting to dig girls. I like to think I've kept that balance over the years and well into my adulthood as- for me- I find it a very nice place to be :)

Japanese flavored sci fi dude battling some demon?!? Totally makes no fucking sense but in such a great way!

Again, sci-fi meets sexuality. Check the demon out grabbing at the half-naked chick's tush.

Castle INSIDE the mouth of a monster rock...with a fucking DEMON ON TOP! That's metal baby! And I LUVS it! :)

Sex and MONSTERS! Great mix!

Very Creepshow! I LOVE IT!

Neat underground comic/70's drug influenced stuff. Love this as well. Had hoped Calling All Cars would feel more like this, more XXX rated and sexy and druggy but...well, that's a totally different story. NEXT TIME! :)

Fantasy MEETS sci-fi?!?! HOLY FUCK I AM IN GEEK HEAVEN!!!

Ok ya'll! So that's what's up! Now I'm heading off to clean the house a bit (kid's bday party last nite+kid sleep over= house is a fucking disaster), gonna write up notes and design docs for a game design/production meeting we are having next week (when Sony and Eat Sleep Players are in town for the con), gonna work out, and then catch an afternoon showing of INCEPTION. So that's what's up...

Great weekend ya'll!

Twisted Metal: Apocalypse!

There was a time- 2 years ago about- that the new PS3 Twisted Metal was going to be set in an apocalyptic wasteland. Co-Director Scott Campbell was not in favor as he doesn't dig the whole post apocalypse vibe. So we nixed it. Good thing we did given the glut of apocalypse style games now flooding the market. Scott so smart! :)

That said, I still love this design for post nuke Sweet Tooth!

Come see more images from TM:APOCALYPSE as well as images of the also nixed urban vibed Twisted Metal (along with cool give aways and other cool Twisted Metal stuff) at the Twisted Metal panel at the San Diego Comic Con! It's in room 8 on Friday at 1pm!

Hope to see ya there!

I swear I'm not dead...

...and neither is the blog. We've just had a hell of a crazy milestone that's been taking all our time. With all the execs in town for E3, Sony scheduled a milestone for our game the week of E3 so the upper ups could swing by the Santa Monica studios and we could demo for them how the game is coming along. That's the great news. The BAD news is we've been head deep in fecal paste trying to make this demo kick ass to the point that the execs will forget about all the sweet Sony games from E3 and leave LA talking about OUR game demo instead :)

Granted, we're a bit behind those other games that are show floor ready BUT still...one can hope! :) Milestone is looking great but it's taken all our time and so that's what's been up with lack of updates. I WILL be at E3 for a day next week it turns out cause I'm driving up to LA to show the execs the game. Figure if I'm in town anyway, I'd be nuts if I didn't swing by the convention center. So perhaps I'll see some of you there. If not, chat with you on the blog in about a week!

So excited- E3 is days away! Gosh, what do I really want to see the most?!?!

Here's my initial list of games I'm eager to play/see/learn more about. I am sure I'm missing some but this is just what leaps to mind:

MORTAL KOMBAT
MOTORSTORM 3
ZELDA
BULLETSTORM
NATAL (want to try it, I'm curious. Already played with the MOVE and I dig that as well)

Ok back to the grind! Talk next week!

ASHAMED TO BE FROM ALABAMA

I LOVE the South. And I LOVE Alabama.

But these recent ads make me ashamed to say I am from Bama.

Just a fucking disgrace.

12:30 AM RAMBLE

I need to go to bed.

But first:

1. the EATSLEEPPLAY forum is now open! Please visit our newly birthed community to get to know members of the team (who never get enough press, credit, or face time), chat about some of the great games the team has made over the years, talk about our new game (when the time is right), and just shoot the shit with fellow game lovers. Here's a link so ya got no excuse! :)

2. SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 STAR REPORT: 10 stars including a mystery star. Loving it so far, just started 2 days ago. Grabbing a bit of play here and there and I think it rocks.

3. SPLIT/SECOND- Playing this too- LOVING it.

4. NO MORE PAPER?- Have not bought a physical magazine or read a physical newspaper since my iPad arrived in the mail. Have also read two books in the same amount of time. Amazing device- I love it!

Ok, what a shitty blog post. I know, I know. But I'm fried. Going to bed- talk soon!

MILESTONE CRUNCH & GAME MAKIN' LESSONS!

Hey ya'll- sorry been away for a few days. Game is in milestone crunch on all fronts and there is just no time to breathe.

Wanted to pop in and say hey and share 2 things that have come up in recent days that have really struck me as important lessons about making games or making anything creative or...hell, perhaps living life in general? Dunno. I will elaborate more when I have more time but for now, here goes:

1. BEING NICE IS NOT THE SAME THING AS BEING A PUSHOVER...AND OFTEN TIMES EVEN BEING NICE CAN BE MISTAKEN FOR BEING A PUSHOVER SO SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN- At times I've had a reputation for being kind of a hard ass to work with. Demanding, basically. I'm not a yeller or a shouter unless I'm yelling more at the tv or the game and something's not working. Then I'm all like, "FUCK THESE MOTHERFUCKING SWORD ATTACKS! NOT TRANSITIONING FROM ATTACK TO ATTACK DAMMIT!"...but It's rare that I deal with people that way. I DO sometimes, but not often.

Again, I can be demanding and very protective of a game's vision and I can be relentless in pushing myself and pushing others to improve that vision. And the people I love working with are the same in that they push me and force me to improve the vision too. Nice thing about that is, the game gets better. But you do take on a reputation for being a pain at times.

So as of late I've tried to be nicer, kinder, more inclusive.

Fuck that. Doesn't work.

Can I still be nice? Always. But not at the expensive of the game's vision. Thank God no real harm was done to our current game because of it. Nice wake up call tho. Grateful for the lesson.

Here's the reality: on a creative project there's the vision that once it's locked, we all must be slaves to. Protect that vision at all costs. And sometimes that means you open the doors a bit to let the vision grow and be improved by the right members of the team who 'get' it. But not everyone on a game will always get it and so it's key to know when an idea improves and when it takes away from the game's core.

And never allow your desire to be nice and liked to get in the way of the vision because the game will suffer.  And the team will suffer as well because a failed game means the studio is at risk.

2. AH-HA MOMENTS ARE RARE WHEN STARTING A GAME- Been thinking about future games to make as of late and as we're head deep in this current one and it's taken on its own life and it's come together as it's own living, breathing thing, I caught myself thinking that a new game idea should have the same sense of purpose and meaning and locked vision that a game as far along as our current game should have. I felt the same after GOD OF WAR when looking for new game ideas: that the game idea should feel solid and locked and I should just 'know it' when the idea came to me or was pitched to me by someone else. But I only recently realized that it rarely works that way. Often times you just start the journey of a new creative project confident or semi confident in where you are going but until the team comes in and adds their amazing talents, before you get the- hopefully- great ideas that you contribute and see come to life, your game really is this lifeless thing. And so as I search for new ideas it's key to remember that a lot of faith is needed in knowing what idea to pull the trigger on because it's very rare that the idea itself is a slam dunk.

Ok- back to it. So slammed no time to proof read so hell if I know if what I just wrote even makes sense!
Sure there is a shit ton of typos!

Talk soon- later ya'll!

WHA?!?

This is from Kotaku's just posted, very positive preview of the 14.99 download only TOMB RAIDER hitting this summer:

My only concern is that The Guardian of Light may be over too soon after you start, with just eight or so hours of gameplay. But there are a couple of things that lead me to believe that won't be a big issue.

Wha?!?! 8 hours of fun for 15 bucks. That's a BAD DEAL?!?!

Kotaku, you know I love you- and MOST of your writers :) - but come the hell on. Really? 8 hours for 15 bucks is not ok in your book? And your preview is so positive as well that I'm now dying for this game! But I think our views on the value of a dollar are way outta whack.

David

ps. When is Kotaku gonna do their own PAX kind of convention. I bet it would be a big success.

MY LA WEEKEND

Hey- slammed with work so this is gonna be fast.

Went to LA on Friday to do a playtest and now am back with a trunkful of very useful notes. Gonna spend most of the day getting those on lists and then sending off to Utah to see which ones we can/should/want to address and which notes we want to let go (always a tough a call after a play test: which comments to incorporate and which to throw back).

But a few things about my trip- if I may:

#1- I SAW KEVIN SMITH!
Caught the Kevin Smith Q/A live at the House of Blues on Sunset. Me and my brother went and it was...ok. Yeah, just ok. I dig the Smith a lot but his schtick is feeling tired and no longer feels genuine. I get it tho- I feel for the guy. I am a fan, to be sure. But you see the same kind of 'tiredness/struggle' in his movies as well: where he's been trying since Jersey Girl to step away from his View Askew stuff but has not had a lot of success with that and so keeps going back to his old vibe because (just guessing here) it's either safe/feels natural and/or it's lucrative. I don't begrudge the man- it's tough to grow creatively and I wish him the best. But we left the show 2 hours in (he's known to go on for 3-5 hours sometimes). Nice and kind a guy as he seems, the show just dragged and got pretty dull. Still, cool to see he can pack a house. As I said: I'm a fan, so good for him!

#2- IRON MAN 2=IRON MEH 2
Yeah, I wrote that...whatever! Would have been happier catching this on Blu Ray when it hits in 4-6 months. It was fine but nothing close to being special. IM1 was crazy fresh and had a heartbeat that was incredibly attractive and charismatic and the story was so tight and smart. This one just felt...corporate? Serviceable? Certainly not a BAD movie in the scheme of things. It was solid for sure but it just was not special enough to merit me spending 2 hours of my life at a theater. As I get older, I still love movies but I get a lot more picky now and this one - for me- just didn't cut it as a full price,  big event deal. Watching at home or catching with medium expectations at a matinee= the perfect way to watch Iron Man 2.  Come on Marvel Studios...don't start slipping on us now!

#3- FULL CIRCLE!
So I caught IM2 at the fantastic GROVE in L.A. with my brother. Before the flick we browsed the amazing Barnes & Noble superstore that they have there and check out what I found!

How cool! I had seen early versions of this at the studios, but to see it on the stands (last copy left too!) was just crazy neat! I grew up loving comics and still buy and read comics and hell, some of my personal inspiration for God of War 1 came from my love of comic books. And to see a comic based on a story/world/character that I had a huge hand in crafting? And to see it as a REAL comic in a REAL store (vs. a one off comic that is done JUST for promotional purposes and handed out at trade shows and such?)...Well wow man. That's just amazing to me. How cool is that?!?!

#4- PHYSICAL MEDIA IS DEAD TO ME
Got the ipad. LOVE the ipad. Read comics, books, magazines on the thing all the time. I've spent way too much cash already on ipad digital media that used to fill my house as physical media. Man, it's all nice and tidy and simple to carry around on my little ipad. Totally rocks. I love it. But having all that digital media on the pad made it odd going into Barnes & Noble Saturday cause I LOVE bookstores. Always have. And mega book stores like the B&N at the Grove make me crazy happy and I could spend hours in there just browsing and getting lost. But now that I've had a week of buying and reading magazines and comics and books on the ipad, a real life book store just seems archaic to me. I know some peeps will always love their physical media (and I get it...I LOVE to smell new books and fold magazines and carry around a weathered paperback that I'm working thru)...but once you go digital with this stuff, the waste of space and death of trees and mega effort to create and store and sell and buy real life paper media just seems...stupid.

#5- SPAM- Hate all the spam the posts have gotten as of late. Turned on the spam filter which means if you want to comment you gotta enter in one of those little code words they provide you. Sorry about that. I know it's a pain. But it beats having 50 messages about buying some bullshit this or that.

Ok, tons to do! Later ya'll!
